Missing Nancy Guthrie: Internet Users See 'Eerily Familiar' Murder Suspect as Possible 'Porch Guy'

Online speculation linking murder suspect Alex James Barnett to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has intensified in Tucson, Arizona, after the Pima County Sheriff's Department issued a warrant in a separate homicide inquiry.

Barnett, 33, is wanted in connection with the killing of Tucson Police Department recruit Carlos Ramirez, authorities said.

Some X users have compared footage and photographs connected to the Ramirez investigation with images of the masked man seen at Guthrie's home before she vanished.

Investigators have not said Barnett is connected to the Nancy Guthrie case. The two investigations remain separate.

Barnett Manhunt Sparks New Nancy Guthrie Theories

In August, the Sheriff's Department named Barnett as one of three suspects wanted over the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Carlos Ramirez, a Tucson police recruit who was days away from completing the academy.

Ramirez was found shot dead just before 6am on 19 August inside his home near West Valencia Road and South Camino Verde, according to Pima County Sheriff's Department statements.

His fiancée, a 23-year-old corrections officer, was also shot and wounded, while the couple's child was inside the house during the attack. No possible motive has been publicly disclosed.

Authorities said 39-year-old Santiago Jorge Rogers, one of the three men sought in connection with the shooting, was arrested early on a Saturday morning at a hotel on South Palo Verde Road with assistance from the FBI. He was booked into the Pima County jail on a first-degree murder warrant.

Investigators are still searching for Barnett and a third, unidentified man who were captured on surveillance video before and after the shooting. The PCSD has warned the public that Barnett could be 'armed and dangerous' and has appealed for information via 911 or the 88-CRIME anonymous tip line.

How a Murder Suspect Became a 'Porch Guy' Contender

Once the Sheriff's Department shared Barnett's photo and surveillance footage on social media, parts of the internet immediately shifted focus to the Nancy Guthrie case. As images circulated on X, formerly Twitter, several users began posting side-by-side comparisons of Barnett and the 'Porch Guy' figure from Guthrie's doorbell video.

'Now I ain't one to gossip, but these SHOES on the first guy seem eerily familiar and the second guy looks like a possibility in the Nancy Guthrie case too,' one commenter wrote, referring to surveillance footage of suspects in the Ramirez shooting.

The same user urged others to 'LOOK at him. His tats. His gait. His height & weight', while adding they were not claiming the two cases were definitively linked.

Another user, pointing to Barnett's criminal history as reported by the Arizona Daily Star, wrote, 'This guy got out of prison late 2025. Any connection to Nancy Guthrie? See the way he walks?' Court records cited by the newspaper list previous charges against Barnett that include domestic violence, burglary, theft and child abuse.

Others focused on Barnett's posture and movement in the Ramirez case footage. 'That guy when he gets out of the vehicle walks like the perp for Nancy Guthrie!' one person posted. 'He swings his head around low and watch his walk as he walks away. 857 is saying that he's old, but I see muscular arms.'

Another user noted that, to their eye, Barnett 'kinda resembled the guy caught on Nancy Guthrie security camera' when he looked down while walking, and wondered where the other two men in the Ramirez case were dropped off.

In a more forensic-style armchair analysis, an account that has been closely tracking the Nancy Guthrie investigation shared a side-by-side breakdown of Barnett's facial features against stills of the masked 'Porch Guy'.

Police Keep Nancy Guthrie and Barnett Cases Separate

Despite the noise online, the Pima County Sheriff's Department has not linked Barnett to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Officials have continued to treat the Ramirez murder and the Guthrie disappearance as entirely separate cases.

As of publication, there has been no indication from the Sheriff's Department or the FBI that Barnett is a suspect in Nancy's kidnapping.

The Sheriff's Department has, however, leaned on social media to seek help in the Ramirez case.

In an appeal posted online, it said, 'An arrest warrant has been issued for 33-year-old Alex James Barnett in connection with the murder of Carlos Ramirez. Detectives also need help identifying 2 additional suspects.'

The same post highlighted surveillance footage that appears to show a third, unidentified suspect exiting a vehicle in a car park near South Palo Verde Road and East 33rd Street at around 10.50 am on 19 August 2026.

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on 1 February, with investigators saying they believe she was abducted from her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson the night before.

Doorbell camera footage later released to the public showed a masked man approaching her house and tampering with the camera, a figure quickly dubbed 'Porch Guy' by the internet.

The FBI described this man as around 5ft 9in to 5ft 10in tall, of average build and carrying a black 25-litre Ozark Trail backpack. That footage has since become the public's main visual reference point in a case short on hard leads and long on unanswered questions.

For now, the viral comparisons involving Barnett are simply speculation built on appearance, movement and a shared Tucson setting. Investigators appear to regard the masked man as central to the case, but the identity remains unknown.
