Doorbell Camera Catches 81-Year-Old Working 14-Hour Shifts for Wife's Cancer Bills, Then Strangers Raise $281K

An 81-year-old Texas man who has worked shifts as long as 14 hours delivering lost luggage to help pay for his wife's cancer treatment may finally be able to stop working after strangers rallied around his story and poured more than $281,000 into his fundraiser.

Donald Johnson, of The Colony, Texas, was captured on a doorbell camera struggling to carry heavy luggage up a steep flight of stairs to Erin Howell's home. The footage prompted Howell to learn more about the elderly delivery driver and his difficult circumstances.

'The other day, my door cam caught an 81-year-old man slowly and painstakingly carrying my heavy luggage that had been lost on a recent flight up a steep flight of stairs. He looked absolutely exhausted, and his steps were heavy with effort,' Howell wrote on GoFundMe.

'It completely broke my heart to see a man of his age doing such intense, gruelling physical labour. The reality is that he isn't working by choice; he is working for survival,' Howell added.

A Job He Took to Keep Going

Johnson has worked as an independent contractor delivering lost luggage for about three years. His wife, Josephine, has been battling cancer, and the couple's medical and household expenses became increasingly difficult to manage.

The couple, who told reporters they have been married for 57 years, moved in with their daughter while Josephine faced cancer. Johnson said he eventually returned to work because the family needed additional income. 'It's the only job that will hire me,' he said.

He also told NBC5 Dallas-Fort Worth, 'With the increase in groceries and expenses and everything, we were just getting by. I tried Amazon and Walmart and other places. It was either not the right moment, or they just passed on me.'

Johnson reportedly worked shifts lasting as long as 14 hours and drove hundreds of miles while making deliveries. His vehicle has accumulated more than 200,000 miles, according to the GoFundMe, contributing to mechanical problems.

One Video Changed Everything

Howell said the encounter prompted her to learn more about Johnson's circumstances. 'At an age when he should be resting and spending every precious single moment by his wife's side, he is out on the road lifting heavy bags just to keep her alive and cared for,' Howell said.

She subsequently launched a GoFundMe campaign with a $300,000 target, hoping to help Johnson cover the couple's expenses and retire from delivery work. 'He shouldn't have to carry this crushing financial and physical weight all by himself anymore,' she said. 'Every single dollar raised from this campaign will go directly to helping them survive this crisis.'

Strangers Rally Behind the Couple

The campaign, launched 2 September, quickly attracted thousands of donors. FOX 4 reported that more than 5,300 people had contributed, with the fundraiser surpassing $281,000 by 24 September.

Johnson said the fundraising response could allow him to stop working. 'I think I'm going to be able to stop working, and that's amazing,' he told KDFW. 'So we're not quite totally over the hump yet, but we're getting there very quickly.'

For his wife, Josephine, the support has provided an emotional lift during a difficult time. 'I can face it. I think that's the big difference,' she said. 'Some have made comments, and they're praying for us. And it's just, it's a joyful feeling.'
