Hugo Lloris
Hugo Lloris is not to blame for Tottenham's poor showing against Manchester City, Gary Mabbutt claims.

Tottenham legend Gary Mabbutt has claimed that Hugo Lloris wasn't to blame for the side's 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City, insisting that the defensive mistakes should be owned by the entire squad.

City went up 1-0 within one minute against Tottenham on Sunday and the pain wouldn't stop there with Sandro scoring an own goal and Sergio Ageuro firing just before half time. The Manchester side then scored another three in the second half and now Andre Villas-Boas' job is reportedly under fire as his side look far from the team who were challenging for top spot this time last year.

And while some have pointed the finger at Lloris for his mistakes in the match with City, Mabbutt claims that keepers make mistakes all the time and the lack of support from the defensive line-up was the Frenchman's undoing.

"Hugo in my opinion is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and has had a fantastic season so far," he said, according to the Tottenham & Wood Green Journal. "The two clearances where not what you would expect from him, normally his ball kicking is excellent.

"If you get a keeper that makes a couple of defensive mistakes you have still got other players to make up for that and cover for you.

"They were glaring bad clearances from him but there was more the team could have done."

Tottenham are currently ninth in the table but are just two points off a top four spot. Much criticism has surrounded their lack of goals this season, with the side having scored just nine times so far, but with eight new signings there will certainly be some time taken into consideration for them to settle into the squad as Spurs attempt to cope without Gareth Bale.
