Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar accuses the Trump administration of political intimidation after federal agents searched her Washington home Ilhan Omar/Instagram

Federal agents raided Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's Washington home just three weeks before the US midterm elections, raising questions about President Donald Trump's involvement after senior administration officials publicly discussed investigating her. Trump insists he had 'nothing to do' with the operation, but Omar has accused his administration of using federal law enforcement to intimidate political opponents.

The 12 October search followed months of immigration fraud allegations against the Somali-born lawmaker, who has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. No publicly disclosed evidence establishes that Trump personally ordered or authorised the raid.

Did Trump Know About Ilhan Omar's Home Raid?

Hours after federal agents searched Omar's residence, Trump denied directing the operation, telling reporters he had 'nothing to do' with it and that the matter was 'really up to the DOJ.' However, days earlier, Trump had suggested that Vice President JD Vance and other administration officials were investigating Omar.

At an Ohio rally following the raid, Trump again attacked Omar's Somali origins, prompting supporters to chant 'Deport.'

His remarks demonstrate awareness of the broader investigation but do not establish whether he knew about the search beforehand or influenced its execution.

Immigration Fraud Allegations Raised Before Raid

The federal investigation follows repeated allegations from senior Trump administration officials concerning Omar's immigration history. Vance previously accused the Minnesota Democrat of immigration fraud without publicly presenting supporting evidence. Omar's office dismissed the accusations as fabricated and defamatory.

In September, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin acknowledged an ongoing investigation involving her family's immigration paperwork. 'Something's going to happen,' Mullin told conservative podcaster Benny Johnson.

According to Reuters, citing a person familiar with the investigation, part of the inquiry concerns immigration documents completed by Omar's late father when she was a child. Authorities have not publicly established that Omar committed immigration fraud.

What Was Seized From Ilhan Omar's Home?

Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted the search under a judicially authorised warrant obtained by the Justice Department. The street surrounding Omar's Washington residence was blocked as agents removed boxes marked 'Seized Property Evidence.'

The Justice Department confirmed that the operation formed part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation but declined to disclose its full scope. Officials have not publicly identified the specific evidence collected or announced criminal charges against Omar.

Trump Administration Accused of Political Intimidation

Omar condemned the search as an 'attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.'

'For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns,' she wrote on X, adding: 'I will not be silenced.'

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and other senior Democrats questioned the timing, describing the operation as deeply disturbing.

The raid occurred approximately three weeks before the 3 November midterm elections. Justice Department practice has historically discouraged overt investigative actions involving political candidates within 60 days of an election, although the timing alone does not establish improper political interference.

Why Has Ilhan Omar Faced Repeated Scrutiny?

Omar, elected to Congress in 2018, represents Minnesota's 5th District and belongs to the progressive Democratic group known as The Squad. A frequent Trump critic, she has faced longstanding allegations concerning her marriage and immigration status, which she denies. Her family fled Somalia's civil war before settling in the United States during the 1990s.

The federal investigation remains ongoing, with its full scope undisclosed.
