America's Draft Register Will Add Young Men Automatically in Just 86 Days

Millions of young men in the US are approaching a major change to the US military draft registration system, with automatic enrolment scheduled to begin in December 2026.

The change will allow the federal government to register eligible men for potential military service without requiring them to complete the existing registration process themselves.

For American men approaching their 18th birthday, the distinction matters. Automatic registration will change how their details enter the federal database, but it will not alter the basic requirement for most male US citizens and male immigrants aged 18 through 25 to register under the current system.

The system has remained in place despite the country ending compulsory military service more than five decades ago.

When Will Automatic Draft Registration Begin?

The change is scheduled to take effect in December 2026 under Section 535 of the National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump on 18 December 2025. The current Selective Service regulatory record lists 19 December 2026 as the statutory deadline for automatic registration.

The legislation requires the Selective Service System to register eligible men automatically, replacing the existing requirement for individuals to submit their own registration.

The agency's January 2026 performance report describes the change as shifting the registration burden from individuals to the government through integration with federal data sources.

However, implementation remains uncertain. The Selective Service System reportedly withdrew proposed regulations for automatic registration in July, raising questions about whether the agency will complete the regulatory process by the statutory deadline.

Who Will Be Added to America's Draft Register?

The legislation covers male US citizens and other eligible male residents between the ages of 18 and 26. Certain foreign nationals maintaining lawful non-immigrant status are exempt.

Women are not required to register under the current law, and the automatic registration provision does not extend the requirement to them.

For eligible men, the change removes the need to initiate registration themselves once the new system becomes operational, although the legislation permits the agency to request personal information needed to identify individuals and maintain accurate records.

Until automatic registration takes effect, men who are required to register must continue following existing procedures. Failure to register can affect eligibility for federal employment, certain state-based student aid, job training and US citizenship for immigrant men.

Does Automatic Registration Mean America Is Bringing Back the Draft?

No. The United States has not reinstated compulsory military service, and registration is not the same as joining the armed forces. The Selective Service System says its registration system would be used to provide personnel only if a national emergency required it and the President and Congress authorised such action.

The country ended its active military draft in 1973, although registration was restored in 1980 under President Jimmy Carter. A return to compulsory military service would require separate authorisation, and the automatic registration provision does not itself authorise induction into the military.

The Selective Service System must complete the transition to automatic registration while ensuring that its records accurately identify eligible individuals. The agency's implementation plans include modernising its technology and integrating federal data sources into the registration process.

Young men can currently check their registration status through the agency's official verification service. Those who have not registered should continue to comply with existing requirements until the new system becomes operational.
