Chappell Roan's Nipple Ring Dress: How It Was Attached and Why the Internet Is Trolling It
The dress was not an original provocation, but a deliberate revival

Chappell Roan's appearance at the 2026 Grammy Awards sparked one of the night's most intense online reactions not just for what she wore, but for how it was engineered.
The singer arrived at the Crypto.com Arena on 1 February draped in a sheer, hooded chiffon cape in a deep merlot shade, matched precisely to her hair. Moments later, she removed it on the red carpet, revealing a custom Mugler look that appeared, at first glance, to defy gravity and convention.
The Pink Pony Club singer revealed a floor-length chiffon skirt seemingly suspended from silver rings at her chest, leaving her upper body bare. Within minutes, clips of the reveal were circulating across social media, with the most common question being how exactly the dress was attached and whether it was safe.
The Mechanics Behind the Look
Despite viral claims that the skirt was held up by real nipple piercings, the construction was far more controlled. According to members of Roan's glam team, the garment did not attach directly to her body through actual piercings.
Instead, prosthetic nipple pasties were applied to her chest, with silver rings threaded through the prosthetics rather than through the skin.
The prosthetics, created by artist Sasha Glasser using products from Out of Kit, were smooth and nipple-less, providing full coverage while creating the illusion of pierced nipples. The skirt was then secured to those rings, distributing weight safely and avoiding the obvious risks of tension, tearing, or injury if someone stepped on the train.
This approach also allowed Roan to remain technically covered on live television, sidestepping network standards while maintaining the shock of near-total exposure. Later in the ceremony, Roan changed into a more traditional ivory Rodarte gown to present an award.
A Revival With History
Furthermore, the dress was not an original provocation, but a deliberate revival. Mugler first sent nipple-ring-suspended dresses down the runway in 1998, a collection that caused controversy even within fashion circles at the time.
Then, models wore silk slips attached to real piercings, a shock tactic that was as much about discomfort as about spectacle.

Mugler's current creative director, Miguel Castro Freitas, reinterpreted the concept for the brand's Spring 2026 collection, modernising it for contemporary audiences and guidelines. Hence, Roan's version added the removable cape and prosthetic construction, adapting a 1990s runway idea to a red carpet governed by broadcast rules and social media moderation.
Why the Internet Turned on It
Online backlash was swift. Critics called the look inappropriate for an awards show, questioned Roan's judgment, or framed it as evidence of declining standards in pop culture, noting that in the past, celebrities have appeared on red carpets in nude dresses that have caused uproar.
At the same time, the prosthetic reveal fueled another wave of commentary. Some accused the look of being 'fake' or misleading, while others pointed out the irony that social platforms allowed images of near-naked breasts to circulate freely as long as nipples were absent.
Meanwhile, Roan addressed the reaction with humour rather than defensiveness. In an Instagram post the following day, she wrote that she found the outrage amusing and encouraged people to 'exercise your free will.'
