Trump's 'Explosive Diarrhea' Has Become a Bizarre Midterm Talking Point, Columnist Arwa Mahdawi Argues
Guardian columnist Arwa Mahdawi says Democrats are using outbreaks linked to lettuce, jalapeños and sprouts to criticise Donald Trump's administration and Republican candidates

Donald Trump's second term has turned 'explosive diarrhea' into an unlikely US midterm talking point, Guardian columnist Arwa Mahdawi argued on 1 October, highlighting Democrats' attacks on the administration over a series of foodborne illness outbreaks.
Her column followed outbreaks involving lettuce, jalapeños and sprouts. Democrats have incorporated those incidents into their campaigning ahead of November, with Mahdawi suggesting that concerns about Americans' digestive health could damage Republican candidates as the party seeks to retain control of Congress.
Trump's Food Safety Record Enters the Campaign
Mahdawi argued that an apparently unusual election theme could offer Democrats an effective way to criticise the administration. Her focus was on food safety and the people affected by contaminated produce during Trump's second term.
'In a fitting encapsulation of Trumpism, explosive diarrhea has become a midterm talking point. Food recalls and stomach-churning parasites have been a mainstay of the news this year and Democrats are milking the issue.'
The messaging she highlighted extended beyond a single lawmaker. It included the Democratic Party's official account, alongside Rhode Island representative Gabriel Amo and Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren, who have drawn attention to the outbreaks.
Mahdawi nevertheless qualified the comparison with Joe Biden's presidency. She distinguished the overall number of recalls under successive administrations from the scale of individual outbreaks, identifying the latter as the difference that mattered to her argument.
'To be fair, the number of food recalls during Trump's second term is not remarkably different than it was under Joe Biden. What is different, however, is the scale of the problem.'
Lettuce Outbreak Features in Criticism of Trump
A deadly cyclospora outbreak was reportedly linked to lettuce produced by Taylor Farms. The food producer reportedly donated $1 million to MAGA Inc just days after the Trump administration postponed a key food safety compliance deadline.
The reported timing places the donation after the regulatory decision. It does not establish that the contribution prompted the postponement, or that the delay caused the outbreak.
Lettuce was not the only produce associated with illness. A salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños affected Americans across at least 27 states. Separately, an outbreak tied to sprouts sickened more than four dozen people.
Those incidents provided the background for Mahdawi's criticism of the administration and her assessment of how Democrats could employ food safety concerns in the congressional campaign.
From Trump's Toilet Claims to November Messaging
Before the current outbreaks, Mahdawi noted, Trump had already spent years discussing toilets and the number of times Americans supposedly needed to flush them. He repeatedly claimed they were being forced to flush well over a dozen times, attributing the problem to Environmental Protection Agency standards.
'I regret to inform you that the president is once again responsible for a national conversation about toilets,' she wrote.
Her column returned to that imagery when considering the prospect of Republicans maintaining control of Congress. Mahdawi warned that Americans' digestive health could suffer if the election failed to restrain Trump, presenting that as her assessment of what could follow.
'If you thought the diarrhea-inducing lettuce was bad, then I'm afraid things only look likely to get worse,' Mahdawi wrote. 'If Trump isn't reined in at the midterms, the whole country is going down the toilet.'
The US recently declared the end of what Mahdawi described as the largest ever recorded cyclosporiasis outbreak, linked to contaminated lettuce.
