George R.R. Martin's The Winds of Winter has passed an unwelcome milestone in 2026. Readers have now waited longer for the sixth A Song of Ice and Fire novel than Martin took to publish the first five books.

The comparison follows more than 15 years without another instalment. A Game of Thrones appeared on 1 August 1996, and A Dance with Dragons was published on 12 July 2011. The sixth novel remains unpublished as of 11 October 2026, with no confirmed release date.

The milestone is specific to Martin's series. It is not a record for the longest delay in publishing history, nor did the milestone first arise in October. Readers were discussing the comparison back in June.

How The Winds of Winter Outlasted the First Five Books

The first five novels were published across 5,458 days. By 11 October 2026, 5,570 days had elapsed since A Dance with Dragons. That makes the wait for one book 112 days longer than the entire span between the first and fifth.

The intervals matched on 21 June 2026. By the following day, the wait for The Winds of Winter had exceeded the earlier publishing run. The figures are calculated from the original publication dates listed by publisher Penguin Random House.

The earlier sequence had a rhythm of its own. A Clash of Kings debuted in Britain in 1998, with its American edition following in 1999. A Storm of Swords arrived in 2000 and A Feast for Crows in 2005.

Then the story began travelling faster on television than in print. HBO premiered Game of Thrones in 2011 and ended the series in 2019. Martin's novels had not reached their intended conclusion when the television adaptation finished.

That does not make The Winds of Winter a novelisation of the programme's later seasons. In a July 2022 blog post, Martin said his plots changed while he wrote them. He explained that some developments would resemble the television story, while others would take different paths.

The absence of a book has prompted impatience alongside genuine affection for the world he created. In a June 2026 discussion on Reddit, one reader wrote, 'I just hope we get to go back into the world as written by him one more time.' Others doubted that the series would be completed.

Those comments reflect particular readers' views, not proof that the manuscript has been abandoned.

Why the Winds of Winter Still Has No Release Date

Martin was working with material destined for the sixth book before A Dance with Dragons appeared. In May 2011, he explained that completed chapters had been shifted out of the fifth novel and into its sequel during editing.

That detail corrects a common simplification. The book's long gestation did not begin neatly with the July 2011 publication of its predecessor. Some of its material was already written.

Martin has been candid about the difficulty of his approach. In 2022, he described writing, rewriting and restructuring chapters as characters and storylines developed. He also suggested the novel might become longer than A Storm of Swords or A Dance with Dragons.

Meanwhile, Westeros has continued expanding elsewhere. House of the Dragon brought his fictional history to television, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered in January 2026. Martin is credited as a co-creator and executive producer of the latter.

His involvement in those productions does not establish how much time they took from the unfinished novel. Nor does the divided reception to Game of Thrones' finale demonstrate that he delayed writing in response.

In May 2025, Martin addressed readers frustrated by announcements about his other work. 'And I care about Westeros and WINDS as well,' he wrote. He had previously rejected rumours that the final two books were secretly finished and being withheld.

The original plan for A Song of Ice and Fire grew from a trilogy into seven intended volumes. The Winds of Winter is the sixth, with A Dream of Spring planned to follow. No confirmed timetable has been announced for either book.
