A 75-year-old visitor is believed to have fatally shot his 73-year-old wife before killing himself at an Ohio nursing home, after bringing in a concealed handgun, authorities said. The apparent murder-suicide happened shortly before 11.30am on Thursday at The Meadows at Osborn Park in Erie County.

The man was visiting his wife, who was a resident at the facility, according to the Erie County Sheriff's Office. Authorities said the husband had a concealed handgun, and staff later reported hearing two gunshots from the woman's room.

Deputies and Huron firefighters were dispatched to the nursing facility following a report of a shooting. Staff members went to the resident's room after hearing the shots and found the husband and wife suffering from gunshot wounds.

Employees immediately began providing medical aid while emergency responders arrived. Sheriff Paul Sigsworth described the deaths as an 'apparent murder-suicide' and said no one else was injured.

Ohio Nursing Home Murder-Suicide Leaves Husband and Wife Dead

The woman was pronounced dead at the nursing home, according to the sheriff's account. Her husband was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities had not released either person's identity as the investigation continued. The sheriff's office also said a motive had not been determined.

Several 911 calls were made after the gunshots were heard. Recordings reviewed by the Sandusky Register captured staff discussing first-aid efforts and directing deputies on how to enter the building.

The calls document the immediate response but do not establish what happened inside the room before the gunfire. As of publishing, investigators have not publicly identified a motive for the shooting.

Concealed Gun Becomes Focus After Ohio Nursing Home Shooting

The Erie County Sheriff's Office said the husband had a concealed handgun while visiting his wife. Its account does not say how the firearm entered the facility or whether employees knew he was carrying it before the shooting.

The sheriff's account also does not allege that the man deliberately hid the weapon from staff. Authorities have so far limited their description to saying that he possessed a concealed handgun.

Staff members responded after hearing the shots and began treating both people. No residents, employees or other visitors were reported injured.

The Meadows at Osborn Park later reassured families and the wider community that residents were safe.

'During this difficult time we ask for compassion and grace. All residents are safe. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers,' the facility said in a statement.

Ohio Nursing Home Murder-Suicide Investigation Continues

The Erie County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the two deaths. Autopsies are expected to be conducted at the Lucas County coroner's office, according to the sheriff's release.

Those examinations could provide additional information about the fatal injuries, although authorities have not announced when further findings will be released.

Erie County Commissioner Pat Shenigo said he was 'deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life' at The Meadows. He expressed support for the families, residents and employees affected by the shooting.

Shenigo also thanked law enforcement officers, first responders and nursing home staff for their response. He said appropriate support and resources would be made available to residents and staff in the days ahead.

Investigators have continued to describe the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide rather than a final determination. Authorities have not publicly explained what led to the shooting or identified a motive.

The couple's identities also remained undisclosed in the sheriff's initial account. Officials have not said when their names might be released.

For The Meadows, the immediate concern has centred on residents and employees who were inside the facility during the shooting. The nursing home has said all other residents are safe.

The investigation remains active while authorities await the autopsy findings and examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The sheriff's office has said no one else was injured, leaving the deaths of the husband and wife as the only reported casualties from the incident.
