GoFundMe Refunds $745,000 to Donors After 81-Year-Old Courier's 'Neighbour' Fundraiser Turns Out To Be Run by Daughter

GoFundMe has returned nearly $745,000 to donors after removing a viral fundraiser for 81-year-old Texas luggage courier Donald Johnson, ruling that it contained 'factual misrepresentations' and breached its terms of service.

The company confirmed that all contributors to the campaign had been refunded after its Trust & Safety team reviewed the appeal and removed it from the platform. Later reporting said the fundraiser collected almost $745,000 (about £560,344), although GoFundMe has not publicly confirmed the final figure.

Johnson, of The Colony, Texas, was filmed on a doorbell camera carrying luggage during delivery work while his wife, Josephine, underwent cancer treatment. The footage prompted a fundraising appeal that quickly drew widespread attention.

GoFundMe Removes Donald Johnson Fundraiser

GoFundMe said its review identified information in the fundraiser that violated its terms of service. 'Our Trust & Safety team identified factual misrepresentations, which directly violates our Terms of Service,' the company said in a statement carried by NBC News.

'As a result, the fundraiser has been removed and all donors have been refunded,' the statement added. The company did not publicly itemise each detail it considered inaccurate, although subsequent reporting identified the organiser, who presented herself as a neighbour called Erin Howell, as Amy Johnson, the couple's daughter.

GoFundMe's public statement did not single out Johnson's work, his wife's cancer treatment or the video as the specific information it found misleading. Subsequent reporting focused instead on the organiser's identity and her stated relationship to the family.

Reports Differ on Fundraising Total

Earlier coverage put the amount raised at more than $281,000 when the campaign was deactivated. Later reporting, citing NewsNation, said it ultimately collected nearly $745,000 (about £560,344) before it was removed.

The higher figure should therefore be treated as an approximate reported total rather than a precise amount confirmed by GoFundMe. The company's verified public position is that the campaign was removed and contributors were refunded.

The original campaign described Johnson as a luggage courier working to help cover costs associated with his wife's cancer treatment. That account formed part of the appeal, but GoFundMe has not publicly verified every claim made on the page or detailed every conclusion from its review.

The removal does not, by itself, establish that the family's medical circumstances, Johnson's employment or the video were false. It establishes only that GoFundMe said the campaign contained factual misrepresentations that breached its terms of service.

Organiser Identity Was Key

The campaign's description of its organiser was central to the review described in later reporting. NewsNation said the person using the name Erin Howell and presenting herself as a neighbour was Amy Johnson, the beneficiaries' daughter.

Amy Johnson said she believed a fundraiser created by someone outside the family would appeal more readily to potential donors, according to the later reports. She said her father's work, her mother's cancer diagnosis and the family's financial difficulties were accurately represented, claims that GoFundMe has not independently addressed in public.

GoFundMe did not accuse the Johnsons or Amy Johnson of a criminal offence. The action it publicly described was removal of the fundraiser and refunds to donors under its platform rules.
