Harry Styles Condemned by MAGA Following Recent Comments Over the Oscar Belgal ICE Shooting Incident
Lahren challenged the singer's remarks as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the Bronx shooting

Harry Styles has faced criticism from conservative commentator Tomi Lahren after asking a Madison Square Garden audience to think about Oscar Belgal, a man shot during a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation while his five-year-old son was in the car.
Styles made the appeal during his New York concert on Saturday, 10 October, two days after the shooting. In a commentary clip shared by The Big Weekend Show's X account, Lahren challenged his decision to name Belgal, describing him as an 'illegal alien thug'.
The criticism came as federal and New York officials offered differing accounts of the encounter, with investigations into the shooting under way.
Harry Styles' Appeal at Madison Square Garden
Styles paused before performing Sign of the Times and told the audience: 'I just want us to take a moment to think about Oscar Belgal tonight.'
Concertgoers recorded the speech and shared clips online, bringing the remarks to viewers beyond the sold-out Manhattan venue.
The singer urged fans to look after each other and help make the world a place they wanted to give to their children. He also asked them to show care for people who did not look like them or share their birthplace.
'It's up to us to make the world a place that we want to see, that we want to give to our children,' he said.
Styles did not mention ICE by name or offer a detailed account of the shooting. His remarks focused on Belgal and a broader appeal for people to care for one another.
Tomi Lahren Challenges the Concert Remarks
Lahren criticised Styles for expressing concern for Belgal, saying he had 'fled law enforcement at least one time' and had 'a rap sheet a mile long', according to the Irish Star.
She argued that Belgal did not belong in the community and did not make it safer. Her comments reframed the singer's appeal around Belgal's immigration status and alleged conduct.
The Irish Star also quoted an online commenter asking: 'Can we deport Harry Styles too?'
The post illustrates some of the criticism directed at the singer, although the reported reactions do not establish the scale of the wider response.
ICE Shooting Prompts Differing Official Accounts
Belgal, 28, was shot in the neck on Thursday, 8 October during an enforcement operation in the Marble Hill neighbourhood of the Bronx.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at least one ICE officer fired seven shots. Belgal was struck in the neck, while his five-year-old son, who was in the back seat, was physically unharmed.

Federal officials allege that Belgal drove his vehicle towards officers and struck government vehicles during the attempted arrest. That account has been central to the federal authorities' defence of the operation.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticised the shooting, questioning why officers fired repeatedly into a vehicle containing a young child.
Police released surveillance footage of the encounter and body-camera footage showing NYPD officers responding afterwards. The surveillance footage provides evidence of the events leading up to the shooting, while the body-camera recording documents the aftermath rather than the shooting itself. Neither recording, as described in the cited reporting, provides a complete visual record of the moment the shots were fired.
Oscar Belgal's Court Record and the Investigation
New York court records cited by CNN show that Belgal pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny following a 2023 robbery arrest and received five years' probation.
He was also arrested on drug charges in 2025 and has pleaded not guilty. That pending case is separate from his established conviction.
The Department of Homeland Security alleges that Belgal has gang ties. That claim remains distinct from his conviction and the unresolved charges against him; the department's allegation should not be treated as an independently established finding.
CNN reported that the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations were handling the federal investigation. Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark also said her office would investigate the shooting.
Separately, Belgal's lawyers challenged his detention in federal court, arguing that he had been arrested without a valid warrant or adequate consideration of his individual circumstances.
US District Judge J Paul Oetken ordered that Belgal could not be removed from the United States without further court authorisation while the habeas case proceeds. The order concerns his removal from the country; it does not determine whether the shooting was justified.
