Following the controversial allegations of sexually assaulting an anonymous student at a Cornell University fraternity, 'Cornell 7' member Jonathan Newell has been barred from enrolling in a different school.
Newell had enrolled at Nova Southeastern University after being expelled from Cornell due to allegations that he sexually assaulted the anonymous student, dubbed 'Jane Doe'.
The institution faced pressure to address concerns regarding his presence at the university, alongside several other members of the Chi Phi fraternity who were implicated in the incident and have been named the 'Cornell 7'.
Newell Was Barred From Entering Nova Southeastern University Following Outrage
According to the Daily Mail, Newell was ordered to keep away from Nova Southeastern University after he attempted to transfer from Cornell.
Nova Southeastern University President and CEO Harry Moon confirmed on Monday that the university had taken measures regarding reported sexual abuse allegations connected to a student they did not mention by name.
'We are all concerned about reports of serious allegations of sexual abuse that occurred approximately two years ago at another university and may involve a student who later transferred to NSU,' they said.
He added that the university was taking these allegations very seriously and that 'the safety and well-being of each member of our campus community is a top priority.'
Moon claimed that the school wasn't aware of the incident when Newell enrolled and said, 'Because this matter involves federal law regarding an individual student, the university is legally restricted by federal regulations that limit what the university can share.'
The university president gave assurance to concerned parents, saying that the institution remains vigilant and that they have taken necessary steps to ensure that there is 'any current threat to the university community with regard to the matter.'
Newell's Involvement With the 2024 Incident Where He Texted 'Free P*ssy' Before Sexually Assaulting a Woman
The allegations against Newell that led to disciplinary action at Cornell and scrutiny over his reported enrolment at Nova Southeastern stem from an incident at the Chi Phi fraternity house in Ithaca during October 2024.
On that day, a then-20-year-old female Cornell University student entered the fraternity house to meet a friend who invited her to a party there. The woman currently identified as Jane Doe alleged that she was coerced into taking ketamine, alcohol and marijuana before being sexually assaulted by members of the fraternity.
Newell, who was implicated in the lawsuit filed by Doe, reportedly sent a message in the fraternity's Snapchat group advertising her for sexual encounters.
According to a separate report from the Daily Mail, members of the fraternity group chat wrote, 'I f***ing love chi phi', 'You can walk in and whip it out', as well as someone asking if the 'shop' was still open.
The lawsuit alleges that seven of the fraternity members participated in sexual activity with Doe while she was too incapacitated to give consent.
Cornell had conducted investigations surrounding the incident, punishing the seven accused for sexual abuse. Newell, who had allegedly sent the crude advertisement and hit her in the rear hard enough to leave bruises, was expelled alongside fellow student Matthew Ingalls.
News of the incident provoked outrage from all over the world, with Cornell students assembling to protest against the university's handling of the incident.
Michael Kotlikoff, the Cornell President, promised greater transparency and called the rape allegations 'deeply disturbing.'
