FBI Chief Kash Patel Gets Engaged to Singer Alexis Wilkins Amid Fury Over Her Four-Agent SWAT Detail
Prosecutors charged a man over a threat to Wilkins, but an ex-bureau official calls her protection improper

Kash Patel, 46, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and country singer Alexis Wilkins announced their engagement on Sunday, 4 October. Wilkins, 27, wrote 'Went and got the law involved' above their photo on X. The announcement quickly drew attention, not only for the couple's relationship but also for the unusual security arrangements surrounding Wilkins.
Past FBI directors' spouses were protected while travelling with them but did not receive a personal government security detail, The New York Times reported. Patel, however, authorised a full-time security team for Wilkins after taking office in February 2025. According to an FBI official quoted in that report, the team included four Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) agents and two vehicles. SWAT units train for hostage rescues and violent arrests. The official said Patel overrode advice to seek a legal review first.
Jet Trips and How the Pair Met
The engagement follows a year of scrutiny over Patel's use of public resources. On 25 October 2025, he flew on an FBI jet to a Pennsylvania wrestling event where Wilkins sang, a trip he has defended. Flight records show the jet then went to Nashville, her home city. FBI directors must use government aircraft for security reasons and reimburse the government for the full coach-fare equivalent of personal travel. Her engagement post drew over 43,000 likes in two days.

The pair met in autumn 2022 at a party hosted by country singer John Rich in Nashville, the newspaper reported. Patel has said he spoke to Wilkins that night to compliment her jacket, and they began dating by early 2023. Wilkins later attended Patel's Senate confirmation hearing, sitting in the gallery. At his swearing-in , Patel took the oath on a Bhagavad Gita that Wilkins held for him.
SWAT Escorts and Royal Encounters
Tactical agents reportedly drove Wilkins to a Nashville hair salon. In May 2025, they accompanied her to a resort near London before a Windsor Castle dinner with King Charles III. London's Royalty and Specialist Protection command declined to collect her at the airport, accoridng to one person familiar with the plan. In January 2026, after she sang the national anthem at a California fundraiser, agents drove her 135 miles to Los Angeles airport.
Christopher O'Leary, a former senior FBI counter-terrorism executive, told The New York Times: 'The inappropriateness of this cannot be overstated.' Before taking office, Patel criticised predecessor Christopher Wray for using government jets for holidays. On Katie Miller's podcast, Patel said if he truly abused his travel privileges, he would attend all Wilkins' shows. FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson said in February that Wilkins faces more than 12 current death threats over the relationship.
What Comes Next
The couple have not set a wedding date, and Wilkins' announcement made no mention of her security detail. In May, Senate Judiciary chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican, asked Patel to list all his FBI flights. The FBI said in July that Patel repaid all personal travel costs.
In March, Boston prosecutors charged a 26-year-old Massachusetts man with emailing Wilkins a threat. Court papers say he sent it after reading February's report on her security. He pleaded not guilty. In May, Wilkins files a defamation lawsuit against MS NOW and two reporters over a December 2025 report she says falsely portrayed her.
