Millennials who grew up watching 'Gossip Girl' and 'Gilmore Girls' are in for a treat as Netflix recently released the trailer for its upcoming film, 'Guarding Stars.' It arrives on 18 November 2026 and stars familiar faces Leighton Meester and Jared Padalecki.

The film reunites two familiar faces from early-2000s television. Meester was best known for playing Blair Waldorf, the ambitious Upper East Side socialite in 'Gossip Girl', while Padalecki was best known as boy-next-door Dean Forester in 'Gilmore Girls'. Though Padalecki later became widely recognised as Sam Winchester in 'Supernatural', the Blair-Dean pairing evokes memories of their earlier roles.

What Is 'Guarding Stars'?

Based on Katherine Center's bestselling novel, 'The Bodyguard,' the Netflix film follows Hannah Brooks (Meester), a no-nonsense professional bodyguard assigned to protect Hollywood action star Jack Stapleton (Padalecki). When Jack is set to visit his parents, he fears worrying his mother, played by Andie MacDowell.

Enter the fake-dating trope: Hannah pretends to be Jack's girlfriend, which leads to complications. Could the pretend relationship turn real? Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who previously directed 'Purple Hearts' and episodes of 'Ginny & Georgia,' directs the film.

Aside from MacDowell, the film also stars Noah LaLonde, country singer Walker Hayes and pop star Ava Max. 'Guarding Stars' is part of Netflix's 2026 holiday movie line-up.

Blair Meets Dean (or Sam?)

For fans who met Meester and Padalecki in the 2000s, the pairing brings together two different television worlds. Blair Waldorf was the privileged Manhattan socialite who was not afraid to step on people's toes for the sake of her ambition. Despite being an anti-hero, Blair and Meester became fan favourites.

Dean Forester, for his part, was introduced as the first love of the book-loving and intelligent Rory Gilmore, played by Alexis Bledel, one of the show's two leading stars. Dean's small-town persona would not stand a chance against Blair Waldorf's sharp personality.

Sam Winchester wouldn't be a match either, as his monster-hunting lifestyle would clash with Blair's upscale Upper East Side upbringing. But fans are definitely excited to see Meester and Padalecki in a different setting.

Fan Reactions

'Mind you, BLAIR WALDORF AND DEAN??? This romcom probably arrives 20 years late, but incredible,' said one fan. But another rebuked: 'Dean??? Es Sam Winchester.'

Another shared: 'There is nothing that could keep me from watching Blair Waldorf and Dean fall in love in a cheesy Xmas rom-com. I will be watching this the day it comes out. I am the demographic for this!'

Another fan said the trailer may have changed their life: 'Hey, person who had the idea to put Jared Padalecki and Leighton Meester together in a romcom, know that you changed my life.'

A Meester fan called the tandem a match made in heaven: 'I tend to watch anything if it has Leighton Meester. And this feels like an actor pairing made in 2010 heaven. HERE FOR IIIITTT.'

'Blair Waldorf taking down a moose is what sold me,' said another. It is not something that would have happened in the 'Gossip Girl' universe.

The nostalgia factor is particularly appealing to viewers who have followed the actors' careers since those early roles. Meester has continued appearing in television and film, including the recently canceled 'Good Cop/Bad Cop.' Meanwhile, Padalecki starred in 'Walker' for four seasons after 'Supernatural.'
