'How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days 2' in Development: Kate Hudson Set To Produce as McConaughey Could Return
Paramount develops sequel to the iconic romcom, tapping into Y2K nostalgia

A sequel to 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' is in development at Paramount, with original star Kate Hudson returning to produce more than two decades after the romantic comedy became a global box office hit.
The project is understood to be in the very early stages, though Paramount has not yet confirmed the development, according to industry sources saying the studio hopes to bring back both Hudson and Matthew McConaughey as Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry.
The original 2003 film followed Andie, a women's magazine journalist who sets out to write an article about modern dating by deliberately driving a man away within ten days, while Benjamin, an advertising executive, makes a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him in the same timeframe.
Their mutually deceptive experiment became one of the defining romantic comedies of the early 2000s and helped cement both leads as genre favourites.
Sequel Rides Wave of Y2K Romcom Nostalgia
The project comes amid a wider Hollywood push into Y2K nostalgia, with studios revisiting their catalogues for familiar material. 'The Devil Wears Prada 2', 'Scary Movie' and 'Toy Story 5' have all arrived in cinemas this year drawing on late 1990s and early 2000s source material, delivering strong box office returns in the process.
Paramount has not yet locked down a writer or director for the sequel, according to people close to the project. The eventual script is expected to shape whether Hudson and McConaughey formally sign on.
Hudson will produce through her own banner alongside Stacey Sher, whose credits include 'Pulp Fiction', 'Erin Brockovich' and 'Django Unchained'. The original took nearly $180 million [approximately £139 million] on a $50 million budget, according to box office data, and has remained a fixture on cable and streaming platforms.
In a 2024 interview with People, McConaughey recalled meeting Hudson before filming, saying: 'Immediately, we were comfortable with each other, and we jacked with each other, and we busted each other's chops, and we laughed a lot.' He described a 'rock and roll exchange' that convinced him the pairing 'could be some heavyweight fun.'
The film also left a fashion legacy, with the yellow Carolina Herrera gown Hudson wears in the climactic party sequence becoming one of the most referenced dresses in modern cinema.
Will Hudson and McConaughey Return for the Sequel?
Hudson has since moved between romantic comedies and more dramatic work, including roles in 'You, Me and Dupree', 'Bride Wars' and 'Fool's Gold'. She has also taken on acclaimed performances such as 'Song Sung Blue', which earned her a second Oscar nomination in 2025.
Her breakout role as Penny Lane in 'Almost Famous' in 2001 first put her on the awards map. She currently stars in Netflix's basketball comedy 'Running Point' as Isla Gordon.
McConaughey, meanwhile, spent much of the past decade steering away from the genre that made him a star, following films including 'The Wedding Planner' and 'Failure to Launch' with more serious work such as 'Mud', 'The Wolf of Wall Street', 'Interstellar' and 'Dallas Buyers Club'. The latter won him the 2014 Oscar for Best Actor.
He recently returned to cinemas after a six-year gap with 'The Rivals of Amziah King'. Despite that shift, McConaughey has spoken warmly about the original film, describing it on the Happy Sad Confused podcast as 'the gift that keeps on giving' and calling it an 'anchor' of the romcom genre.
Representatives for Hudson and McConaughey have been contacted for comment. Details of the project, including casting and creative team, remain unconfirmed at this early stage.
