Shivon Zilis, the mother of four of Elon Musk's children, has drawn mixed reactions online after describing the Tesla and SpaceX CEO as having a 'tortured soul' and saying he 'fights for humanity' in a highly personal post about their breakup.

Zilis addressed the situation directly on X on Friday, Oct. 2, writing, 'It's hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that's just how it is sometimes.'

Her post came after an X account tracking follows and unfollows reported that Musk was no longer following Zilis on the platform he owns.

The post combined an announcement of the separation with an extended reflection on Musk and a screenshot that appeared to show a recent private text exchange between the pair.

Zilis's Description of Musk

Zilis said she felt fortunate to have shown Musk 'how it feels to be deeply understood, nurtured, and peacefully loved with stability and gentleness.' She attributed her desire to provide Musk with that kind of love to what she described as 'the tumultuous nature of his early life,' his 'often tortured soul' and 'how hard he fights for humanity.'

Her description drew contrasting reactions on X. Some users responded sympathetically, while others criticised the way she portrayed Musk and the decision to discuss their relationship publicly. Others questioned the contrast between Zilis's generous description of Musk and her account that the relationship had ended with 'no warning.'

She wrote, 'I wanted him to feel the deepest and most stable form of love this world can provide. My heart is full knowing I got to do that, and I hope it leaves a lasting good effect.'

Zilis also wrote, 'We were always his safe space,' without specifying whom she meant by 'we.' She went on to describe their four children as 'four beautiful little loves of my life' and said she hoped she and Musk could remain 'great friends and coparents.'

Her closing words were equally unguarded. 'I'm hurting, but care deeply about E and will always be cheering for his happiness,' she wrote, adding, 'God speed, Elon, the world is lucky to have you.'

The Online Reaction

The post drew both criticism and support from other X users. One X user wrote, 'I'm embarrassed for you,' while another questioned how Musk could be considered 'a light to the world' if, in the user's view, he could not be 'a light to his spouse and children.'

Others pushed back against the criticism. Author Juanita Broaddrick replied that the post made her sad, calling Zilis and Musk 'two beautiful people who love their kids.'

Film director and historian Erin Derham Van Swol praised Zilis's response, urging her to 'love on those babies' and 'love on Elon, even if it's from afar.'

One user asked whether the matter 'could be handled privately,' reflecting criticism of Zilis's decision to publish a screenshot that appeared to show a private text exchange with Musk.

What Remains Unclear

Musk had not publicly responded to Zilis's post, according to available reporting. Her post provides Zilis's account of the breakup, the circumstances surrounding the separation have not been publicly explained in detail by Musk.

Zilis's post used unusually intimate language for a public breakup announcement, including references to a 'tortured soul,' a 'safe space' and Musk's efforts on behalf of humanity. The post instead prompted a broader discussion on X about how much of the couple's private relationship should be made public.

Zilis admitted she was hurting, praised Musk's intelligence and said their children made 'every single day the best day of my life.'

The post has nevertheless brought renewed public attention to the couple's relationship and to Zilis's description of Musk. It has turned a private relationship ending into a widely discussed public story about Musk and Zilis.
