Sony has announced a new digital-only PlayStation 5 for Japan, priced at ¥55,000, including tax. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black is scheduled to launch on 19 November, with pre-orders due to begin on 20 October.

The console is a new colour variant of Sony's existing Japanese-language-only PS5 Digital Edition, rather than a newly announced global model. It can be used only when the system language is set to Japanese and the PlayStation account is registered to Japan.

Sony has not announced plans to release this model in other markets.

The company also advises against using the Japanese-market console outside Japan because it meets Japanese domestic safety standards only.

A Lower-Priced PS5 for Japan

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black (Console Language: Japanese Only) on 13 October. It is a Japan-limited model with a suggested retail price of ¥55,000 (£262.13), including tax.

Pre-orders are scheduled to open on 20 October through participating PlayStation retailers and online stores in Japan. Sony says orders will begin sequentially, so availability and opening times may vary between retailers. The console is due to launch on 19 November.

Sony already sells a Japanese-language-only PS5 Digital Edition for ¥55,000. The Midnight Black model adds a new colour option to that Japan-specific range. Sony has not announced a global version of the new model.

Any conversion of the Japanese price into another currency is indicative only. Sony has not announced an international price for this model, and the ¥55,000 suggested retail price remains the only officially confirmed figure.

What Buyers Get

The console has no built-in disc drive. It includes an 825GB SSD and supports downloadable PS5 games and compatible downloadable PS4 games obtained through the Japanese PlayStation Store.

Sony says the model retains core PS5 features, including its SSD, 3D audio, backward compatibility with PS4 games and the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The company also says some specifications have been customised for the Japanese market.

Japanese buyers can add the matching Midnight Black disc drive for ¥11,980 (£57.10), including tax, bringing the combined price of the console and drive to ¥66,980 (£319.30). The drive enables playback of physical games once attached to the console.

The separate drive is therefore an optional purchase rather than an included accessory. Buyers who prefer digital games can use the console without it, while those who want physical media can add it later.

Why It Is Japan-Only

The new model follows Sony's Japanese-language-only PS5 Digital Edition, announced in November 2025 and released later that month. Sony describes the Midnight Black version as a new colour variant of that Japan-limited console.

The model gives Japanese consumers a ¥55,000 entry point to the PS5 Digital Edition range. Sony has not explained whether the Japan-specific restrictions are intended to protect pricing in other markets.

The restrictions are central to the product. Sony says the console's system language must be Japanese and that it can be used only with a PlayStation account registered to Japan. These are separate conditions: one applies to the console's settings, while the other applies to the account used with it.

Sony's announcement specifies a Japanese release and does not announce availability in the United States, the United Kingdom or other markets. Prospective importers should therefore treat the console as a Japan-specific product rather than assuming it will work normally elsewhere.

The Midnight Black Appeal

The colour is the most visible difference from the existing Japanese-language-only Digital Edition. Sony says the console uses a black colour scheme designed to complement its existing Midnight Black PS5 accessories, including the PlayStation Portal Remote Player.

Sony also offers Midnight Black covers for compatible PS5 models as separate accessories. Buyers should check model compatibility and local pricing before comparing the cost of covers with the new console.

For Japanese players, the offer is straightforward, a new colour option for a digital PS5 at ¥55,000, with the choice of adding a disc drive later. The console combines a lower entry price with the core PS5 experience, although buyers should note the storage limit and the absence of an integrated disc drive.

For players outside Japan, the appeal is more complicated. The design may attract interest, but the language and account restrictions, together with Sony's warning against overseas use, make the console unsuitable for anyone seeking a standard international PS5.

Sony has not announced a comparable Midnight Black digital model for other markets.
