A boiler exploded at a sweet factory in northern Mexico on Thursday (October 24), leaving at least one dead, injuring dozens of workers and badly damaging the building, officials said.

Authorities reported at least one person was killed in the blaze at the factory which is located in an industrial park at Ciudad Juarez, a large city on the U.S. border.

Unconfirmed reports emerged the blast may have been caused by a gas leak.

Officials reported 11 people were badly injured, four of whom were in critical condition. Thirty people were treated for minor injuries.

Ciudad Juarez's Civil Protection Director Fernando Motta told media security teams are at the site to attend to the many victims of the explosion.

A second official said, speaking on condition of anonymity, that around 20 people who work at the plant were unaccounted for. It was unclear if they were in the building at the time.
