Shocking footage has emerged from Romania that shows a fan run onto pitch and punch a player before being taken down by security and the victim's team-mates.

The attack occurred during a tie between Romanian sides Petrolul Ploiesti and visiting Steaua Bucharest.

Mihai Costea had just put the away side 2-0 up with a penalty when the assailant, clad entirely in black, eased past the lax security and ran full pelt for Steaua defender Galamaz.

With the player awaiting the restart he was oblivious to the attacker, who in one swift movement lept into the air and delivered a solid right-hook to the side of his head. Galamaz crumpled to the floor as the hooligan rushed towards his team-mates.

But the Steaua players gathered on the half-way line enacted swift retribution. A flying-kick to the chest brought him to the ground before Serbian defender Novak Martinovic delivered a firm kick to his stomach. Further blows rained down as security and match officials struggled to contain the riot.

Eventually, the ugly scenes were broken up and the hooligan was dragged from the pitch - with Martinovic and goalkeeper Razvan Stanca both sent off for their actions.

The match was later called off when a flare was thrown on to the pitch.
