Golf Open Championship Prize Money: Scottie Scheffler is $3.1M Richer, How Much Did the Other Top Finishers Earn
Scheffler's $3.1 million victory headline a record-setting payout at the 2025 Open Championship

Scottie Scheffler won the 2025 Open Championship on 20 July at Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland, finishing ahead of Harris English and Chris Gotterup. The American star claimed the Claret Jug and a record-setting prize of £2.3 million ($3.1 million). His win capped off a remarkable major season and pushed his career earnings close to £74 million ($100 million). Scheffler's dominant performance answered the big question of who would take home the lion's share of the £12 million ($17 million) purse.
Scottie Scheffler's 2025 Open Championship Win and Prize Money
Scheffler's latest major triumph further solidifies his dominance on the PGA Tour. He took home $3.1 million in prize money for his win at Royal Portrush, according to PGA Tour. This marked his third major title in 2025 and added 750 FedExCup points to his season total.
The win also granted Scheffler several additional perks, including automatic entry into all four majors for the next five years, increased Ryder Cup qualification points, and a significant climb in the world rankings. His earnings in 2025 alone now surpass £14 million ($20 million), edging him closer to the $100 million career earnings milestone.
2025 Open Championship Purse and Distribution Breakdown
The total purse for the 2025 Open Championship stood at $17 million, making it the third-richest major tournament behind the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. The winner's payout of $3.1 million represented over 18 percent of the total fund.
This year's Open saw an emphasis on rewarding top finishers. Roughly 58 percent of the entire purse was distributed among the top 10 players. However, players finishing outside the top 30 saw a steep decline in earnings, highlighting the financial disparity within professional golf.
How Much Did the Top Finishers at the Open Earn?
Runner-up Harris English earned £1.31 million ($1.76 million) for his strong performance behind Scheffler. Chris Gotterup, who placed third, walked away with £842,284 ($1.13 million). The three-way tie for fourth between Wyndham Clark, Li Haotong and Matt Fitzpatrick saw each of them receive £544,627 ($730,667), according to Yahoo Sports.
The players who tied for seventh, including Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Robert MacIntyre, each collected £336,789 ($451,833). Four players finished tied at tenth place and received £227,081 ($304,650) apiece, including Bryson DeChambeau and Brian Harman.
Open Championship Prize Money for Lower Finishers: Big Drop Below Top 10
Despite the substantial rewards for those in the top positions, the earnings for lower-placed finishers dropped sharply. Golfers who finished around 50th place earned under £35,033 ($47,000). Those who made the cut but placed near the bottom received approximately £28,902 ($38,775).
Players who missed the cut were not left empty-handed. Amateur players within the top 10 were given £9205 ($12,350), the next 20 received £7677 ($10,300), and all remaining participants earned £6522 ($8,750). This structure, though supportive, further underscores the massive earning gap between the top-tier golfers and those on the fringe.
Scheffler's PGA Tour Ranking and 2025 Career Earnings After Open Win
Scheffler's win at Royal Portrush adds another layer to his already historic 2025 season. Having also won the PGA Championship and contended in all four majors, he continues to dominate the PGA Tour in both performance and prize money.
His latest win boosts his FedExCup ranking significantly and cements his place as the sport's most consistent and financially successful player of the season. As the season progresses, Scheffler remains the top contender across upcoming Tour events and team selections.
