A walking, talking humanoid robot made history at the White House on 25 March 2026, escorting First Lady Melania Trump into the East Room as she called on governments and technology companies to put artificial intelligence inside classrooms, and eventually inside homes, as a personalised educator for every child.

The spectacle was the centrepiece of the inaugural Fostering the Future Together Global Coalition Summit, a two-day event Melania Trump convened to gather first spouses and technology leaders from 45 nations.

The robot, Figure 03, the third-generation humanoid built by Sunnyvale, California-based startup Figure AI, introduced itself in 11 languages before retracing its steps down the red-carpeted hallway. 'I am grateful to be part of this historic movement to empower children with technology and education,' it said. The First Lady quipped: 'It's fair to state, you are my first American-made humanoid guest in the White House.'

The Figure 03 Robot: What It Is, What It Does, and What It Cannot Yet Do

Figure AI unveiled Figure 03 in October 2025 as its third-generation humanoid robot, designed primarily for household tasks: laundry, cleaning, washing dishes, and governed by the company's proprietary vision-language-action AI model, called Helix. Helix processes real-time visual data through onboard cameras and uses AI reasoning to complete tasks autonomously, responding to verbal commands without following a pre-written script.

The robot is not currently marketed for educational use, nor does Figure AI hold any active federal government contracts, NBC News reported. Figure AI founder and CEO Brett Adcock wrote on social media that he was 'proud to see F.03 make history as the first humanoid robot in the White House,' adding that the unit was 'fully autonomous' during its appearance.

The company's dedicated manufacturing facility, BotQ, is designed to produce up to 12,000 humanoid robots per year, with a stated goal of 100,000 units over the next four years.

Figure AI competes in a crowded and rapidly expanding field. Its rivals include Boston Dynamics, Tesla's Optimus programme, and a growing number of Chinese manufacturers that Beijing is actively backing as part of its national strategy to lead the global robotics industry, a dimension the First Lady addressed directly in her remarks by linking AI adoption in education to America's 'long-term economic superiority.'

'Imagine a Humanoid Educator Named Plato': Melania Trump's Vision for AI in the Classroom

Seated alongside French First Lady Brigitte Macron in the East Room after the robot's exit, Melania Trump outlined what she described as an imminent shift in the way children learn. Her remarks, published in full by the White House, went further than a general endorsement of AI tools in schools.

'The future of AI is personified,' she said. 'It will be formed in the shape of humans. Very soon, artificial intelligence will move from our mobile phones to humanoids that deliver utility.' She then invited her audience to picture a specific scenario: 'Imagine a humanoid educator named 'Plato.' Access to the classical studies is now instantaneous — literature, science, art, philosophy, mathematics, and history. Humanity's entire corpus of information is available in the comfort of your home.'

The First Lady's vision for 'Plato' was explicitly personalised and home-based. 'Plato will provide a personalised experience, adaptive to the needs of each student,' she said in the White House readout. 'Plato is always patient, and always available. Predictably, our children will develop deeper critical thinking and independent reasoning abilities. The AI-powered Plato will boost analytical skills and problem solving and adapt in real time to a student's pace, prior knowledge, and even emotional state.'

She added that the 'byproduct' of such a system would be a 'more well-rounded lifestyle for our children — freeing up time for being with friends, playing sports, and developing interests beyond school.'

US Education Secretary Linda McMahon was present in the front row throughout the First Lady's address, an attendance that drew notice given McMahon's ongoing work to scale back the federal Department of Education.

A Two-Day Summit, 45 Nations, and the Broader Push for Public-Private AI Strategy

The Fostering the Future Together initiative launched in September 2025, when Melania Trump travelled to the United Nations General Assembly in New York to announce it. Tuesday's opening session took place at the State Department, where the First Lady convened a working group on AI in education, digital literacy, and child safety online. Olena Zelenska of Ukraine and Sara Netanyahu of Israel were among the first spouses who attended that day's sessions.

Zelenska, whose country is currently engaged in an active war with Russia, said Ukraine was 'joining as a reliable partner' and spoke about her government's investment in digital infrastructure and AI-enabled learning, according to ABC News coverage of the summit.

The first spouses heard national presentations from nine countries, including France, Poland, the UAE and Morocco, each outlining domestic strategies for integrating technology into education systems.

The summit unfolded on the same day President Trump appointed Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Oracle Executive Chairman Larry Ellison, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to a new AI advisory council, a body that will weigh in on AI policy and strategic priorities. Trump has framed artificial intelligence as a defining arena of competition with China.

The First Lady's opening remarks on Wednesday lasted seven minutes. She departed before the panel discussion on AI in education, according to CNN's White House correspondent, who noted she also skipped the networking session she had encouraged fellow spouses to use.

The summit closed with a call to action: 'I encourage each of you to take a proactive step after this inaugural summit. Pledge to host a regional meeting. Collaborate with the private sector. Unlock access to tech for those who require assistance. Draft groundbreaking legislation to protect our children.'

The image of a humanoid robot walking the red carpet of the White House East Room will endure as one of the more arresting visual statements of the second Trump administration, a snapshot of a moment when the gap between science fiction and government policy quietly closed by one more degree.
