Hollywood actress Jennifer Garner revealed experiencing a sudden financial panic following the end of her marriage to actor Ben Affleck.

Speaking on Emma Grede's Aspire podcast, the star admitted feeling anxious about her financial future after having significantly scaled back her acting career. She explained that stepping back to focus on family left her unsure about how long she could continue earning through Hollywood.

Garner and Affleck were married from 2005 until their separation in 2015, before finalising their divorce in 2018. The former couple share three children, Violet, Finn and Samuel. Garner had previously scaled back her Hollywood commitments to ensure she was present while raising her young children.

Facing Hollywood Ageism While Raising Her Kids

Garner recalled the moment anxiety settled in once she was out of her marriage. She explained that returning to work left her confronting questions about the longevity of her acting career.

'I panicked when I was first out of my marriage and realised I had taken such a step back in my work,' Garner shared. 'Suddenly I realised, like, I don't know how long I'll be able to work.'

The actress noted that acting careers have not traditionally offered women greater earning power as they age, highlighting how industry expectations can differ significantly based on age and gender.

'This isn't a career that's like, hey, you're 60, you're 55, you're 43, come on, let's pay you more than you've ever made,' she said. 'That's not been traditionally the role.'

The realisation forced Garner to reassess her priorities and take greater responsibility for her financial future. She recognised that she needed to ensure she could support herself and her children.

'I was suddenly like, wait a minute, I have to take care of myself,' Garner explained. 'I have to take care of these kids. So what is it going to be?'

Targeted Career Choices and Business Ventures

To manage this transition, Garner worked closely with her team to establish a highly deliberate employment strategy. Her primary boundary was that any prospective acting job needed to keep her near her children in Los Angeles.

'She was like, how can you work? And I said, I can work in Los Angeles,' Garner recounted. 'I can't leave these kids for six months at a time.'

'I would love to, I love going on location, but that is not this time in my career,' the star clarified. 'And so it's like, okay, what can we make happen? How can we do it?' Garner added: 'And we just got really targeted and still about it.'

That targeted focus eventually extended beyond acting and into entrepreneurship. In 2017, she joined Once Upon a Farm as chief brand officer and received a co-founder title, helping grow the organic children's food company alongside its existing leadership.

'Once Upon a Farm was very much a part of that play. It's just the crazy thing is it's working,' Garner revealed. The venture went public in February 2026 at a valuation of approximately $724 million (£531.3 million). Forbes reported that Garner held about a 7% stake, worth approximately $64 million (£47 million) following its first day of trading.

The Financial Reality of Life in the Spotlight

Garner emphasised that public notoriety does not automatically guarantee permanent financial comfort or stability. She noted that living expenses remain a reality regardless of someone's level of fame.

'It's not like you can just unfamous yourself,' Garner observed during the conversation. 'Life is expensive and you still have to kind of figure out how you're going to live.'

'And just because you're well known by people does not mean that there is some great living being provided for you,' she noted. 'And it became very serious to me really quickly as someone who had never given a lot of thought to money,' Garner added. 'Like, oh, I need to be an earner here.'

Despite her success in both acting and business, Garner acknowledged that her personal spending habits still require occasional oversight.

She joked that her business manager can easily make her worry about her finances.

'All he has to do is look at me funny and I convince myself that I am broke,' Garner admitted. 'My problem is... I give a lot of money away.'

'So every now and then he's like, can you pump the brakes?' Garner shared regarding her business manager's warnings. 'So that is something that I had to cool my jets on.'
