The third episode of Dontnod Entertainment's adventure series Life Is Strange will be released on Tuesday 19 May, Square Enix has announced.

Titled Chaos Theory, the episode will introduce a new way for protagonist Max to use her time manipulating powers as the mysterious, supernatural thriller heads towards its final two episodes. A screenshot from the episode (above) was released as well as a synopsis.

"In this next instalment of Life Is Strange, Max and Chloe's investigation into Rachel Amber's disappearance lead them to break into Blackwell Academy after dark, to search for answers. Secrets will be uncovered and Max will find another use for her power," reads a press release.

Life Is Strange adheres to the formula made popular by Telltale Games and in particular its Walking Dead series. Players are presented with a character that they help shape through their relationships with other characters (via dialogue options) and through the choices they make that influence the world.

Dontnod gives a twist to the formula, though, with time-warping powers that allow Max to rewind time and go back on decisions made.

As I say in my review of the game's first two episodes, this might seem like cheating but works due to not knowing how those choices will immediately influence the game and it not being obvious which choice is the "right" one, if indeed there is a right choice.

In a scripted sequence in episode two, Max also freezes time. This was not introduced as an element of gameplay but that could be what the synopsis above is implying could happen.

We'll find out when episode three is released next week.
