Ohio Mom Elizabeth Siders Pleads Not Guilty After Children Found Living in 'Deplorable' Conditions

Elizabeth Siders, an Ohio mother of 16, pleaded not guilty to child endangerment and neglect charges after authorities removed her children from a family home where investigators said they had been living in extremely poor conditions.

Siders, 34, appeared Wednesday in Vinton County Common Pleas Court, where a judge also increased her bond from $250,000 (£187,000) to $550,000 (£411,000) after determining she posed a flight risk. The case involves allegations concerning the treatment of the children, who range in age from 17 months to 18 years.

Children Found Inside Hamden Home

The 16 children were found in July at a home in Hamden, Ohio, during an investigation that initially involved allegations of child sexual abuse concerning members of the extended family.

Investigators found the children living in what authorities described as 'deplorable conditions.' The children had reportedly spent much of the previous four years confined to a single 12-by-12-foot room, where authorities said human waste was present.

The children did not attend school and some were unable to speak. The eldest child was described as developmentally disabled and reportedly could not spell her own name.

Authorities initially went to investigate allegations involving Brandon Henderson, the longtime partner of Siders' sister-in-law, and Joshua Saunders, a cousin of the children.

Siders and her husband, Gary Siders Jr., also face a separate case involving two counts of sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The alleged victim was not one of their children but another relative, aged 13 to 16, who was in their care in 2022.

Husband Also Facing Charges

Gary Siders Jr. has pleaded not guilty in the case involving two counts of sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. He was found incompetent to stand trial last week. Elizabeth and Gary Siders have been ordered to have no contact with each other.

Gary Siders Sr., Elizabeth's father-in-law, was also found incompetent to stand trial. Elizabeth Siders, Gary Siders Jr. and Christina Siders have requested competency evaluations.

Siders' attorney, Tommy Stolly, has raised concerns about her ability to understand the allegations and make informed decisions.

Attorney Raises Pregnancy and Health Concerns

During the court proceedings, Stolly told the court that Siders had married at 15 and had been pregnant for much of the past two decades. He argued that she had not received regular medical or postpartum care despite having 16 children. Her attorney referred to a total of 16 or 18 pregnancies or children in discussing her medical history.

Stolly said he had competency concerns and requested an evaluation. He also said Siders had been isolated within the Siders household from a young age and may not have understood her circumstances or the decisions she was making.

The competency evaluation remains pending.

There has also been speculation that Siders could be pregnant again after she appeared in court without handcuffs and was seen holding her stomach. Her attorney declined to comment on the speculation.

Birth records show that Siders gave birth in February 2022, during the period when the separate allegations of sexual abuse were taking place. She also gave birth prematurely to twins in November 2022, and the twins died shortly after birth.

Siders has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the allegations against her have not been proven in court.
