ABC has confirmed a reboot of the beloved medical sitcom Scrubs, with key cast members and original creators returning.

The new series will revisit Sacred Heart Hospital with a mix of returning characters and new faces, while updating its storylines to reflect the realities of modern healthcare.

Cast and Creators: Braff, Faison and Chalke to Return

Zach Braff will reprise his role as Dr John 'J.D.' Dorian, alongside Donald Faison as Turk and Sarah Chalke as Elliot. The trio are expected to appear as senior doctors mentoring a new generation of medical interns, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Bill Lawrence, the original creator of Scrubs, will return as executive producer. Although he will not run the writers' room, due to ongoing work on hit series Ted Lasso and Shrinking, he remains actively involved in shaping the direction of the reboot, Deadline reported.

'So excited for the chance to get the band back together', Lawrence said in a statement.

The new series is being produced under the umbrella of ABC Signature, with additional creative input from cast members who have maintained close ties since the original run.

Format and Storylines: Mixing Old and New

The reboot will blend nostalgic elements with new storylines that reflect the state of today's healthcare system. The show will explore how seasoned doctors adjust to changes in medicine while attempting to guide young interns through high-pressure environments.

Scrubs, which originally aired from 2001 to 2010, became known for its unique mix of surreal humour, quick-cut fantasies and deeply emotional storytelling. The new version aims to retain that signature tone while addressing more contemporary medical and social themes.

Although details remain limited, sources close to the project suggest the show will strike a balance between character-driven comedy and a more grounded look at hospital life in the 2020s.

Air Date: Expected Launch in Early 2026

ABC has given the reboot a straight-to-series order for the 2025–26 television season. While an exact premiere date has yet to be announced, industry insiders anticipate a midseason launch between January and March 2026.

The show is expected to be scheduled alongside other high-profile ABC comedies such as Abbott Elementary. It is also likely to become available on Disney+ in the UK following broadcast, as part of Disney's international content strategy.

Why Now? A Reboot with Purpose

The return of Scrubs comes at a time when healthcare dramas and comedies are undergoing renewed interest, particularly in light of recent global health crises. Several original cast members have expressed a desire to revisit their characters in a way that feels meaningful and relevant to a new generation of viewers.

In the UK, Scrubs developed a loyal following after airing on E4 and later on streaming platforms. The show's blend of humour, heart and offbeat storytelling resonated with British audiences, and the reboot is expected to attract both nostalgic fans and first-time viewers.

The upcoming Scrubs reboot aims to offer a mix of nostalgia and modern storytelling. With core cast members returning and new characters entering the fold, the series will revisit Sacred Heart Hospital for a new chapter in its story. Fans can expect familiar dynamics, updated humour, and an exploration of how medical practice has evolved over the past two decades.
