Donald Trump has shared a fabricated endorsement from Hollywood star Denzel Washington, claiming the actor considers the US president 'braver' and 'smarter' than anyone he has ever met, only for Washington's representative to confirm that the glowing praise was fake.

Trump posted the alleged endorsement on his Truth Social account on Monday, 12th October, amplifying a social media claim that portrayed the two-time Oscar winner as a devoted supporter of his presidency. The post featured an image of a purported Washington statement describing Trump as 'a great friend and an even better president.'

'I'm proud to be a steadfast supporter, and I'll never apologise for it,' the fabricated quotation continued. While the claim was emphatic, the evidence behind it was not.

Denzel Washington's Representative Rejects Trump Endorsement

Trump shared a screenshot originating from an X account called Red Eagle Updates, which presented the supposed endorsement and asked users whether they agreed with Washington.

However, the quotation did not come from a verified statement by the actor. Washington's representative, Alan Nierob of PMK Entertainment, told The Washington Post that it was 'not real'.

The fact-checking website Snopes had also examined the quotation before Trump's post and found no credible evidence that Washington had made the statement. Its investigation identified the attribution as false.

The episode illustrates how an unverified social media claim can gain a much larger audience when it is amplified by a sitting president, particularly when the alleged endorsement involves a celebrity with significant public recognition.

Fake Denzel Washington Trump Rumours Have Circulated for Years

This is not the first time Washington has been falsely portrayed as a Trump supporter. In June 2021, FactCheck.org debunked a social media post claiming the actor had rejected the Democratic Party and switched his allegiance to Trump. Washington's representative described that claim as a complete fabrication.

Similar rumours circulated in 2016, while a separate false story in 2018 attributed comments critical of former president Barack Obama to Washington. FactCheck.org reported that Washington had, in fact, expressed support for Obama, including praising his performance as president.

The latest quotation also has a history beyond Washington. According to Snopes, substantially the same words were previously attributed to actor Matthew McConaughey and Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, suggesting that the supposed endorsement has been recycled by attaching different celebrity names to it.

That history makes the latest claim particularly misleading: the wording may appear persuasive when presented as a celebrity testimonial, but its attribution does not withstand basic verification.

Washington's Political Donations Tell a Different Story

Washington has generally kept his political views private, making claims about his personal allegiance especially vulnerable to speculation.

However, federal campaign-finance records provide a more concrete indication of his past political giving. Public records show that Washington contributed to Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama in 2008 and Hillary Clinton in 2016, when she ran against Trump.

Those donations do not, by themselves, establish Washington's current political beliefs or prove that he opposes every Republican candidate. They do, however, provide no support for the fabricated claim that Washington has publicly declared himself a steadfast Trump supporter.

The Federal Election Commission maintains searchable records of campaign contributions, allowing the public to check reported donations rather than relying on unsourced social media quotations.
