[VIDEO] UEFA Champions League Reaction and Highlights: Chelsea 2-0 Bayer Leverkusen
Chelsea striker Fernando Torres continued his barren spell in front of goal for the Blues but Chelsea did defeat Bayer Leverkusen in a conniving 2-0 display that will give the fans some hope ahead of their daunting trip to Old Trafford on Sunday.
Chelsea made a winning start to their 2011/12 UEFA Champions League campaign after recording a 2-0 victory over the dangerous Bayer Leverkusen side. Chelsea was dominant throughout but Leverkusen remained resolute in their defensive play and should have been a goal up inside the first three minutes but the goal was ruled out for inconclusive infringement.
Andre Villas-Boas will be happy with the performance of his team and Fernando Torres, but the lack of goals will now be a serious worry for the Portuguese tactician. Fernando Torres was extremely unlucky not to open the scoring with an acrobatic effort but missed by inches. For the rest of the first half the Shed were more in danger from his shots than the opposition goalkeeper. It was another night on which the £50million man could not buy a goal.
Chelsea dominated the second half and their efforts were rewarded after Brazilian defender David Luiz scored a superb low drive. Luiz's 67 minute strike was superb, and more fitting as the Brazilian began the move with a burst from the back and then loitered around the danger zone long enough for Torres to tee him up: he then lashed a low shot from the c corner of the box into the bottom corner of the net.
Chelsea completed their win after Fernando Torres, who could have shot from an acute angle, teed up Chelsea new boy and fellow Spaniard Juan Mata, who tapped into an empty net. Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas will be pleased with his side's efforts but will know his side will have to improve ahead of their top of the table clash with Manchester United on Sunday.
