Manchester United and Manchester City both recorded wins last night in their midweek Premier League games, but both Chelsea and Arsenal stumbled.

United wasted no time in dispatching West Ham as Robin Van Persie fired in the fastest Premier League goal this season after just 32 seconds. A volley from Andy Carroll came close, they could not find a way back into the game and United held out for a 1-0 win that gives them their first clean sheet in over ten games.

City won 2-0 in a hard-fought game at Wigan, as second half goals from Mario Balotelli and James Milner secured their first away win in over a month. The result means that the reigning champions are the only team in the top four divisions of English football to remain unbeaten so far this season.

The win also opened up a six point gap between City and third placed Chelsea, as Rafa Benitez could only manage another goalless draw, this time against Fulham, in his second game in charge.

Arsenal were also held away to Everton, as a Marouane Fellaini strike on the stroke of half time cancelled out Theo Walcott's first minute opener.

The Gunners were leapfrogged by fierce north London rivals Tottenham as Spurs beat Liverpool 2-1. Goals from Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale gave Tottenham a 2-0 lead over the Liverpool at half time, before a comical headed own goal from Bale in the 72nd minute almost let the Reds back into the game.
