Trump Unpopular Across Europe: New Poll Finds 85% of Britons and 95% of Danes View Him Unfavourably
The US president recorded a net unfavourable rating in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, with Denmark showing the strongest rejection

Donald Trump is overwhelmingly unpopular across six major Western European countries, according to a new YouGov poll. YouGov, an international online market research and data analytics firm, conducted a survey measuring the US President's popularity in six countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
Trump had a net unfavourable rating in all six countries surveyed. He was extremely unpopular in Denmark, with 95% of Danes having an unfavourable view of the controversial leader. Only 4% had a favourable opinion of him.
Why Don't Danes Like Trump?
The poll didn't provide reasons for Trump's unpopularity in major European countries, but in Denmark, the issue of Greenland could be a major factor. In 2019, Trump proposed buying Greenland, which is geographically close to the US, from Denmark.
A January 2025 poll showed that a large majority of Greenlanders did not want Greenland to become part of the United States. 'I am happy if the survey is an expression that many Greenlanders will be able to see continued close cooperation with Denmark,' Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reacted to the poll.
France, Spain Poll Results
Around 12% of French and Spanish people favour Trump. However, the unfavourable rating is higher in Spain, with 86% of those surveyed holding an unfavourable view of Trump. The unfavourable rating in France was 79%.
The US–Spain relationship turned sour following the ongoing US and Israeli military operations against Iran, with Spain refusing to allow US forces to use its bases for operations against Iran. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the war, calling it 'reckless and illegal.' Spain later closed its airspace to US planes involved in the conflict.
Trump threatened Madrid with a full trade embargo while also criticising Spain for failing to meet NATO's defence spending target. NATO allies committed in 2025 to a target of 5% of GDP on defence and defence-related spending by 2035.
For France, the most pressing issue stems from Trump's threat of slapping a 100% tariff on French wine and Champagne.

10% of Britons 'Favour' Trump
Some 85% of Britons have an unfavourable view of Trump, while 10% have a favourable opinion. The UK and US governments have historically worked together. One of the most recent displays of bilateral ties was the cooperation between British and US authorities following the arrests of five men near RAF Fairford in late September.
Five men were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. They were released on bail, while police continued investigating. Prime Minister Andy Burnham later said there were 'strong indications' that Iran played a part in the incident, while stressing that the investigation remained ongoing. Iran has denied any involvement.
Trump Is Also Unpopular in Germany, Italy
Italy and the US have maintained a close transatlantic relationship, but Italians aren't necessarily fond of Trump. Some 84% of Italians have an unfavourable opinion of Trump, while only 8% have a favourable view. While Italy and the US have maintained close diplomatic ties, Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have had their verbal exchanges through the media.
In Germany, 87% have an unfavourable opinion of Trump, while 9% have a favourable view. It mirrors tensions between the leadership, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also having clashed with the Trump administration over several issues.
