Donald Trump’s Marine One photo with Natalie Harp and Katie Zacharia draws ‘grotesque’ reaction Photo: @realdonaldtrump/Instagram

Donald Trump was branded 'grotesque' by social media users after a photograph showed the US president aboard Marine One with aide Natalie Harp and White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia during a trip to Alaska on 13 October.

The image, taken as the helicopter door stood open with uniformed Marines on either side and the two women smiling towards Trump, quickly spread on X and was described as 'cozy', 'creepy' and 'grotesque' by some viewers.

The photo was taken as Trump travelled from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage to Wasilla, Alaska, where he was due to address a campaign rally at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center ahead of November's midterm elections.

Photographer Doug Mills later shared the image, identifying Zacharia as press secretary and Harp as special assistant to the president.

In the picture, Trump sits facing the two women, who are smiling towards him. Uniformed Marines stand either side of the helicopter's open doorway. The image records a brief moment of travel with staff, though it does not show what, if anything, the three were discussing.

Why the Donald Trump Photo Went Viral

The reaction was immediate. One X user posted the image with the caption: 'President of the United States with his 'advisers'.'

The replies were less restrained. 'Nice and cozy there,' one person wrote. Another replied simply: 'Grotesque.' A third called it 'creepy', while a fourth observed: 'That's cozy.'

Others turned their attention to First Lady Melania Trump. 'Where's our beautiful First Lady though? I haven't seen her in ages. Could she not be happy about all these younger women around the President?' one user asked.

There is no evidence in the photograph itself of anything beyond a president travelling with members of his staff. The response instead indicates how closely Trump's inner circle is now being watched, particularly when two prominent female aides appear beside him in such a confined, highly visible setting.

Who Are Natalie Harp and Katie Zacharia?

Harp, 35, has become one of Trump's most dependable aides, although her public profile has grown considerably in recent months. She is frequently photographed near the president, and speculation about their working relationship has followed her appearances at rallies and official events.

Zacharia, 41, is newer to the spotlight. She took over as White House Press Secretary this month and delivered her first briefing earlier this week.

That briefing was short. Zacharia spoke for roughly 14 minutes, took questions from a small number of outlets, then told reporters to direct further questions to Trump himself as he prepared to leave for Alaska.

'In fact, I am going to end it because President Trump is heading out to Marine One for our historic trip to Alaska, and we can ask him all of the questions out there,' she said, according to the Associated Press.

The White House described the appearance differently. In a release, it said Zacharia had delivered a 'commanding inaugural press briefing' as the 37th White House Press Secretary.

Context Behind the Speculation

Interest in Harp's proximity to Trump had already been building before the Marine One photograph. She joined him on stage at the Wasilla rally, where she handed him pardon documents to sign, an appearance that renewed attention on her role within his operation.

Zacharia's appointment has added another layer. As press secretary, she is now one of the administration's most public-facing figures, and her first days in the job have been scrutinised intensely.

Put those two developments together, then add a photograph of both women seated close to Trump in Marine One, and social media users responded with their own theories.

Some users argued the criticism was overblown. Trump travels with senior aides, and press secretaries routinely accompany presidents on official trips. The image shows a professional journey, not a confirmed personal dynamic.

Yet the wording of the online responses, from 'cozy' to 'grotesque', shows how quickly a routine travel photograph can become a test of perception for Trump's critics and supporters alike.

What the Image Does and Does Not Show

Trump, Harp and Zacharia were photographed together aboard Marine One on 13 October during a trip connected to a campaign rally in Wasilla, Alaska.

The photograph shows the three seated inside the helicopter during the flight. No audio or further contextual information about their conversation or interactions is available from the image.
