Google has rolled out an Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) update for the international version of the Galaxy Nexus (I9250). Nexus users can now root devices running Android 4.1.2 JZO54K firmware and install ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery. The method uses CWM Recovery as custom recovery and Superuser as the rooting package.

To Root Galaxy Nexus I9250 on Android 4.1.2 JZO54K

    • Download and install Android Software Development Kit (SDK) from the developers' site and set it up with downloading platform-tools and a USB drivers package in SDK (check here for a tutorial)
    • Download Fastboot and extract to android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory
    • Connect device, copy Superuser file to SD card and switch device off
    • Download CWM 6.0.1.0 (recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.10-maguro.img) and save to android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory
    • Restart device in FastbootBootloader Mode (to do so, press Volume Down and Power for a few seconds until text appears on screen)
    • Browse to android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory and open Command Prompt by pressing Shift+Right Click > Open Command Prompt
    • Now type fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-magu and press Enter
    • Select Recovery from Fastboot menu and enter Recovery Mode
    • In Recovery, scroll to Flash Zip from SD card and select using Power; then press Power again and select Choose Zip from SD card
    • Browse to Superuser file using Volume buttons and use Power to select and confirm installation
    • After installation, go to +++++Go Back and select Reboot System Now from Recovery menu; this may take five minutes

The Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.2 is now rooted. This can be verified by using Root Checker.
