Twenty-three-year-old country singer Taylor Swift was the big winner at the 2013 American Music Awards. Swift won the artist of the year award for the third time, after victories in 2010 and 2011, and also picked up awards for favourite female country artist, favourite female pop/rock artist and favourite country album for Red.

The winners are chosen by the American public, voting online and via Twitter.

Justin Timberlake also won three awards. The 20/20 Experience won best album, and Timberlake was also awarded favourite male artist in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. One Direction won best album and best group.

Rihanna won the ceremony's first Icon Award at the age of just 25. Her mother Monica Fenty presented the pop star with the award on stage, telling her daughter "I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one".

Macklemore, who won for best rap/hip-hop album, paid tribute to Trayvon Martin in his acceptance speech from the road.
