Rockstar Games writer Alexa D'Agostino has compared GTA 6 protagonist Lucia Caminos with two of the studio's best-known characters.

Speaking in LOVE Magazine Issue 27, released on 5 October, D'Agostino said writing Lucia as a fully realised person could allow her to 'stand tall' beside Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic.

The interview offers fresh detail on Lucia, Jason Duval and the relationship at the centre of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar developers also discussed the research behind Leonida and how the game approaches the American Dream, crime and modern satire.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Rockstar Games.

GTA 6 Writer Explains Lucia's Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic Comparison

D'Agostino said Rockstar concentrated on making Lucia a convincing individual with her own wants, flaws and personality rather than trying to strip away every familiar character trait.

She described the aim as creating someone who could be 'perfectly imperfect' while still feeling believable. According to D'Agostino, that kind of characterisation could allow Lucia to stand alongside Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic.

Arthur is the central protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2, while Niko leads Grand Theft Auto IV. D'Agostino referred to both characters while explaining Rockstar's approach to writing Lucia.

One important detail, however, concerns Lucia's background. D'Agostino did not say Lucia was an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey. Instead, the writer said her own mother was an immigrant who grew up in Newark, and that she drew partly on women she knew while developing Lucia.

Lucia herself is from Liberty City. Rockstar's official character material says Lucia wants the better life her mother dreamed about during their Liberty City years. Her GTA 6 story begins after she leaves Leonida Penitentiary and seeks to change her circumstances.

Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries similarly described Lucia as determined to create a better life. He said she won't let obstacles stop her from pursuing what she wants.

Jason was written as a contrasting presence. Humphries said Jason and Lucia needed to complement one another and create tension through their differing personalities. Jason is more heavily influenced by his circumstances, while Lucia is portrayed as more determined to push ahead.

GTA 6 Gives Jason and Lucia Different Paths Into Crime

Jason's circumstances help steer him towards drug trafficking and bank robbery, according to Humphries.

He also clarified that Rockstar did not intend Jason's backstory to make a particular statement about class or social mobility.

Rather than establishing one explanation for Jason's criminal behaviour, Humphries suggested players could interpret whether his decisions come from necessity or reflect something more fundamental about his character.

The interview also provides more information about Raul Bautista, an older figure in Jason and Lucia's world. Humphries described Raul as a mentor figure within GTA 6's Bonnie-and-Clyde-style premise.

Raul brings the pair into larger-scale heists while giving them access to someone familiar with Vice City's criminal world.

That crime story sits beside another theme Rockstar is exploring, a more modest version of the American Dream.

Humphries said that dream may no longer mean extraordinary wealth or spectacular success. It could instead be as simple as having a house for a family and paying off loans.

That framing closely connects with Lucia's determination to improve her circumstances. Rockstar is positioning her ambitions against a world where ordinary ideas of stability collide with increasingly serious crime.

GTA 6's Leonida Draws From Rockstar's Florida Research

Rockstar North head of development and co-studio head Aaron Garbut said extensive research trips helped shape Leonida.

One early group travelled through Miami, neighbouring towns and the Florida Keys before reaching Key West. Rockstar later returned to locations that became more important to development with larger research teams.

Garbut said developers spent time with locals and travelled with police officers and gang members during some of those trips. According to him, those encounters exposed the team to sides of Florida that ordinary visitors would be unlikely to experience.

Miami's extremes were another influence. Garbut pointed to the city's wealth, poverty, excess and relentless hustle as elements that fed into Rockstar's fictional version of Leonida.

The same attention extends beyond GTA 6's major missions. Humphries said Rockstar has teams producing pedestrian conversations, advertisements and comedy material across Los Angeles, New York and London.

Writing director James Horton said a dedicated Los Angeles team also focuses on pedestrian dialogue. Rockstar wants those background conversations to remain convincing even when players stop to listen closely.

Humphries also said the studio avoids simply recreating individual viral moments. Instead, its writers take broader phenomena, including conspiracy theories and unusual reactions to everyday events, and exaggerate them through the series' familiar satirical lens.
