Elton Joh is to be presented with the Harvard Aids Initiative Leadership Award to recognize his work in the battle against Aids.

Sir Elton John has won the Harvard Aids Initiative Leadership Award for his work in the fight against Aids.

The veteran singer, who has raised millions for good causes through his Elton John Aids Foundation is set to take home the accolade, which honours individuals who have displayed "outstanding vision, leadership, and courage in the worldwide struggle against AIDS".

John follows in the footsteps of past recipients including tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Richard Gere, philanthropists Bill Blass, Judith Peabody, Marguerite Littman and President Festus Mogae of Botswana who have previously been honoured.

His late friend Diana princess of Wales was also recognised for her Aids charity work in posthumously in 1997.

"When I think of the extraordinary people who have received this honour before me, including my dear, dear friend Princess Diana, I admit to being quite humbled at the thought of being numbered among such august company," John said.

"But I am also tremendously inspired by their courage, vision, generosity, dedication, and grace under fire.

"I pledge to continue my work for as long as it takes to achieve an AIDS-free generation and ultimately a world without AIDS."

The award will be presented to the Candle in the Wind crooner during his charity's 'An Enduring Vision' benefit gala in New York City on October 15 .
