Three teenagers have been arrested following the stabbing of a 14-year-old boy at a youth club in southeast London.

The boy is in critical but stable in hospital after he was stabbed outside the Youth Village youth club in Lewisham.

Three teenagers, two aged 14 and one 13, have been arrested.

Eyewitnesses described how workers at the council-run club rushed to the boy.

Witness Sarah Evens told the Evening Standard: "The people who work at the youth club were trying to help a boy who was lying on the ground. I saw blood, I think they were trying to stop it. It looked like they were pumping his chest."

Lewisham borough commander Chief Supt Russell Nyman said following the incident he would put more officers on patrol.

A council spokesperson said: "This attack was both terrible and shocking. This was an isolated incident that took place outside the local community centre."

Nyman added: "I am committed to tackling the issues of serious youth violence and knife crime in Lewisham.

"Knife crime and serious youth violence are down in Lewisham but we are not complacent and we continue to work with our partners to ensure Lewisham remains a safe borough."

This incident was the latest in a series of recent stabbings involving teenagers in London.

In Pimlico, central London,16-year-old Hani Hicham Abou el-Kheir died after he was stabbed multiple times by a gang of teenagers on 27 January. More recently, Peter Hagan, also 16, died after he was knifed in the stairwell of a block of flats in Wandsworth, south London.
