Trump Says Russian Businessman's Funding of Donald Trump Jr's Bahamas Celebrations Was 'Totally Allowed'

Donald Trump on Friday insisted it was 'totally allowed' for Russian businessman Umar Kremlev to pick up the tab for parts of Donald Trump Jr's lavish post-wedding celebrations in the Bahamas, and said he understood his son had since repaid the money.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, the president addressed questions over Kremlev's role in funding the events, which ProPublica has reported ran to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The outlet said Kremlev, a Russian businessman with longstanding ties to President Vladimir Putin, covered substantial expenses linked to two celebrations held after Trump Jr's wedding ceremony, which took place separately in Florida.

According to ProPublica, the celebrations were staged on two private islands in the Bahamas over consecutive nights, with Kremlev's spending said to include the rental of one of the islands and a fireworks display. Bettina Trump acknowledged Kremlev's involvement in an Instagram post signed by the couple, describing him as a 'dear friend' who had 'generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding'.

Trump did not attend the Bahamas events, having said beforehand that the timing was difficult given his presidential duties.

The Washington Post has since reported that a person close to Trump Jr confirmed the reimbursement to Kremlev, while Reuters cited a separate source confirming similar repayment plans. Neither source has provided public documentation detailing the amount or the date of the repayment.

Russian Sports Power Broker With Kremlin Links

Kremlev heads the International Boxing Association, an organisation that has received financial backing from Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom. He recently accompanied Putin on a trip to China as part of a Russian delegation, though his press office has said he was not part of the official delegation, and he received Russia's Order of Friendship from Putin in April.

Those connections have placed the wedding arrangement under scrutiny, coming more than four years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and amid continuing US diplomatic efforts to end the war.

Kremlev's spending on behalf of the president's son has drawn attention from lawmakers; one member of Congress has opened an inquiry into the payments, according to ProPublica.

Speaking to reporters, Trump compared the arrangement to wedding parties he said he had given for other people in the past, and described a conversation he had previously had with his son about Kremlev's involvement. He did not address specific questions about Kremlev's ties to the Kremlin.

Ethics Questions Over Repayment and Disclosure

The episode has raised questions about how the payment should be classified, whether as a gift, a loan or another form of financial support, and whether it carries any ethics or disclosure implications, given the recipient's proximity to the president. Any such assessment would depend on the precise nature of the payment, the parties involved and the rules that apply, and no ethics or election-law specialist has yet been quoted publicly on the matter.

Bettina Trump has rejected suggestions that Kremlev's involvement carried a political motive, according to CBS News.

The arrangement has nevertheless prompted further questions about the financial relationship between Kremlev and Trump Jr, particularly in light of Kremlev's connections to Russian state institutions and to Putin himself. The White House has not announced any further comment beyond the president's remarks on Friday, and neither Trump Jr nor Kremlev's office has issued a detailed public statement on the repayment.
