'I'm a Law-Abiding Citizen, Sir': US Olympian Jailed for Driving 104mph in 65 Zone in Florida
Body camera footage reveals tense roadside exchange as the Olympic silver medallist faces charges for dangerous excessive speeding.

Body camera footage released on Friday shows a deputy from the Orange County Sheriff's Office pulling over Olympic track star Sha'Carri Richardson before placing her under arrest. The incident took place on 29 January 2026 on State Road 429 in Winter Garden, Florida. Authorities later confirmed that the driver stopped was Richardson, who was travelling at a speed exceeding 100 miles per hour.
According to the sheriff's office, Richardson was recorded driving at 104 mph in a zone with a posted speed limit of 65 mph. Florida's 'super speeder' law allows for jail time when a driver exceeds the speed limit by more than 50 mph or reaches speeds of 100 mph or more.
Deputy Confrontation Captured on Camera
As the deputy approached Richardson's vehicle, his commentary was captured on the body camera recording. 'I would wipe that smile off your face,' he said, before explaining that she had been stopped for dangerous, excessive speeding. He then outlined the seriousness of the situation as he continued the interaction.
Richardson attempted to explain her actions during the stop, telling the deputy that one of her back tyres was underinflated. She suggested that this mechanical issue contributed to her speed on the roadway. She also said her phone had accidentally pressed buttons and changed the vehicle's settings.
The deputy responded by listing a series of observed driving behaviours. 'You're driving at 104 mph in a 65 mph zone with subpar equipment, flashing people to get out of your way, following too close, getting in every lane to pass everybody, cutting me off, passing a car in the inside shoulder with their hazard lights on,' he said. He then told Richardson she was going to jail for excessive speeding.
Arrest and Charge Explained
Richardson was heard pleading with the deputy after being informed of the arrest. 'I really don't want to go to jail,' she said during the exchange. The deputy replied, 'Most people don't, but you gotta think about that before you do the speeding.'
She was formally arrested and charged with dangerous excessive speeding, defined under Florida law as travelling at 100 mph or more. The charge carries the possibility of jail time due to the speed involved.
Florida's 'Super Speeder' Law
Florida's 'super speeder' law is designed to address extreme speeding incidents on public roads. Drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by more than 50 mph, or who travel at or above 100 mph, can face criminal penalties rather than standard traffic citations. These penalties can include arrest and potential jail time.
Law enforcement officials have stated that the law is applied regardless of a driver's public profile. The threshold for enforcement is based solely on speed and driving behaviour. Richardson's recorded speed placed her clearly within the scope of the statute.
Richardson's Athletic Background
Sha'Carri Richardson is one of the most high-profile figures in American track and field. She won a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024 and played a key role in helping Team USA secure Olympic gold in the women's 4×100 relay.
However, her career has previously drawn public attention beyond competition. In 2021, Richardson was barred from competing in the Tokyo Olympic Games after testing positive for marijuana during the United States Olympic trials. That result rendered her ineligible under existing competition rules at the time.
As of the latest update, no additional court outcomes or sentencing details have been made public.
