Marty Supreme
A still from Marty Supreme A24

Gwyneth Paltrow has decided to end her (semi) retirement from Hollywood. This time, the actress returns to the big screen for the upcoming A24 film Marty Supreme.

Directed by Josh Safdie, the sports drama sees Timothée Chalamet play the titular star who has an affair with Paltrow's character. Onscreen, the two stars get hot and heavy, and as it turns out, they were comfortable doing such scenes without consulting an intimacy coordinator for the most part.

Gwyneth Paltrow Plays Timothée Chalamet's Older Lover in 'Marty Supreme'

These days, Paltrow isn't actively seeking roles and doing a movie was probably the last thing on her mind. But then, Marty Supreme came up, and her brother, Jake, a huge fan of Safdie, insisted that she had to do it.

Marty Supreme tells the story of professional ping pong player Marty Reisman, although it is far from being an actual biopic. Instead, Safdie presents a more fictionalized account of his life.

This gives way to Chalamet's Marty having quite the romantic adventure onscreen (although the real-life Marty had a romantic tryst too), one where he ends up having a steamy affair with a much older actress played by Paltrow. The Oscar winner understood the intense nature of her character's relationship with Marty from the beginning. 'They meet and she's had a pretty tough life, and I think he breathes life back into her, but it's kind of transactional for them both,' she told Vanity Fair.

Although Paltrow hasn't seen Chalamet's films, the actress also struck up a good relationship with the young star instantly. 'He's a man who takes his work really seriously and is a fun partner,' Paltrow remarked. Since working with Chalamet, she's also come to acknowledge the Willy Wonka star as a 'thinking man's sex symbol.'

Intimacy Coordinator Was Told To 'Step A Little Bit Back' During Sex Scenes

After years in the business, Paltrow has pretty much seen and done it all. And so, when it came to intimate scenes for her latest movie, the Oscar winner didn't mind it one bit. 'I mean, we have a lot of sex in this movie,' Paltrow even revealed. 'There's a lot—a lot.'

These days, intimacy coordinators are also more present than ever for such scenes, something that Paltrow is still getting used to. 'I was like, "Girl, I'm from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera's on,"' she recalled.

In the end, Paltrow and Chalamet even decided that they didn't really need a coordinator around for their steamy scenes. 'We said, "I think we're good. You can step a little bit back",' the actress revealed. She also explained how having an intimacy coordinator on set can be rather awkward, especially when it comes to choreographing scenes. 'I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that,' Paltrow said. In the end, it's all just work. 'I was like, "Okay, great. I'm 109 years old. You're 14",' she added.

Meanwhile, aside from Paltrow and Chalamet, the cast also includes Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A'Zion, Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful), and Fran Drescher who plays Chalamet's mother. Marty Supreme is slated for release on Christmas Day.
