How to Fail With Elizabeth Day/YouTube

The character of Yuna Hollander has become one of the emotional cornerstones of the hit series 'Heated Rivalry'. While Christina Chang has earned acclaim for her portrayal of the Hollander matriarch, a recent revelation has shed light on the casting process and the actress who was originally offered the role.

Comedian and actress Margaret Cho has shared that the part was initially hers. She turned it down over personal safety concerns during the casting period in April 2025, and has since expressed regret, having predicted from the outset that the show would be a significant success.

Margaret Cho: 'I Am So Pissed'

Cho's decision to decline was not rooted in any lack of interest in the material. In a video shared on TikTok, she was candid about the climate of fear she was experiencing at the time, citing her vocal opposition to the Trump administration and the personal consequences that followed.

The actress said she had received death threats and that individuals had threatened to report her to Homeland Security if she crossed the border. She feared that ICE agents might detain her and opted not to travel for the role.

'I know that this show is gonna be a huge hit, but I don't think that I'm safe crossing the border. I'm like really scared,' Cho admitted. 'I was so terrified when Connor had to cross the border. So it's just like, I am so pissed. I predicted it. I knew it was gonna be a huge hit.'

She added that the decision 'really hurts', though she said watching the show had still been rewarding. 'Just to be able to watch that is so rewarding,' she said.

How Christina Chang Found the Heart of the Hit Series

Following Cho's decision, the production moved quickly to secure Christina Chang. In an interview published in January, Chang described falling in love with the character, citing one scene in particular that confirmed her desire to join the cast.

The scene, from the series finale, shows Yuna's husband David (Dylan Walsh) discovering that their son Shane (Hudson Williams) is in a relationship with his rival hockey player, Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie). Yuna and David's marriage had been quietly deteriorating for years, kept from Shane so he could focus on his career. Shane's sexuality added another layer of complexity to an already strained family dynamic.

'That scene was a large part of why I took [the role],' Chang told The Hollywood Reporter.

Examining Yuna's Complex Relationship With Her Son Shane Hollander

Central to the narrative of 'Heated Rivalry' is the evolving bond between Yuna and her son. Their relationship is defined by unspoken tension and gradual reconciliation, with Yuna serving as an emotional anchor for a high-profile athlete navigating the pressures of professional hockey alongside his private identity.

Fans of the show frequently cite the Hollander household scenes as among the most grounded in the series. Yuna's arc from demanding parent to steadfast ally has resonated widely, and it is that authenticity that Cho said she recognised in the script from the first read. Heated Rivalry has since become a cultural phenomenon, leaving Cho to follow its success from a distance, with a mixture of pride and personal regret.
