Melania Trump Appears to Dodge Donald Trump Kiss at White House Women's Health Event
The moment unfolded as the couple attended a ceremony for an executive order focused on expanding federal research into women's health

Melania and Donald Trump had an awkward moment on camera in the White House Rose Garden during an official ceremony. The event was held to sign the Advancing Women's Health Executive Order, which is a major policy initiative pushed by the First Lady to set up a new Women's Health Division within the National Institutes of Health.
Footage from the ceremony also drew attention online after Melania Trump turned her head as the president leaned in to kiss her, prompting speculation about the interaction.
A Policy Ceremony Draws Online Attention
The goal of the Rose Garden event was to celebrate the establishment of a dedicated White House Women's Health Task Force. This was to channel federal resources toward understudied conditions and health issues affecting women like endometriosis, maternal health and Alzheimer's disease.
The executive order establishes a new Women's Health Division within the National Institutes of Health and a White House Women's Health Task Force to coordinate federal research and policy efforts.
The administration is using executive authority to direct these changes, although implementation remains subject to existing law and availability of federal funding. First Lady Melania Trump pressed the administration to prioritise women's health and organised working sessions with medical experts before the order was signed.
After the formal executive order signing and the customary distribution of commemorative pens to attendees, the President held up the document and reached out to grasp his wife's hand before moving forward for a kiss.
Photographers and cameras caught the exact moment the First Lady pivoted her head away, leaving the President to peck the side of her face. The interaction circulated on social media and attracted commentary from users and news outlets.
The Joke and the Hand Pat
After the attempted kiss, Trump held and patted Melania's hand. Body-language expert Darren Stanton interpreted the gesture as potentially 'condescending or even mocking', although the footage alone cannot establish Trump's intentions.
Stanton added that while Melania has resisted her husband's affections before, this was different because for the first time Trump visibly reacted to the rejection.
The event also included an exchange about Melania's signature. Moments before the attempted kiss, while sitting at the signing table, President Trump handed his wife a pen and remarked to the crowd, 'I don't know if her signature means anything'.
Melania Trump responded without missing a beat, stating, 'Yours is the most important'. Critics seized on the remarks, interpreting the exchange as part of a wider pattern of tension in the couple's public interactions.
A History of Public Body Language Scrutiny
This Rose Garden incident adds to the list of heavily scrutinised public interactions between the President and First Lady over the course of his political career.
Observers frequently point back to a viral clip from 2017, where Melania appeared to brush off the President's attempt to hold her hand on a tarmac. There was also a similar viral interaction during the January 2025 presidential inauguration. At that event, she wore a wide-brimmed navy hat that prevented the President from kissing her cheek.
The footage does not establish why Melania turned her head, and the couple's intentions cannot be determined from the gesture alone.
