Is Star Fox 64 Being Remade? Nintendo Announces Surprise Switch 2 Reboot
Star Fox 64 returns with enhanced visuals and new content on Switch 2.

Nintendo just confirmed a Star Fox 64 remake is coming to the Switch 2 with a huge visual upgrade.
Nintendo is reviving Star Fox 64 for the Switch 2, the new game simply titled Star Fox. It's an official remake of the Nintendo 64 classic rather than a sequel, IGN reported. In a surprise announcement via Nintendo Direct, Nintendo promised fans the game would be faithful to the original while giving it a major visual overhaul.
Star Fox 64 Remake Confirmed in Surprise Announcement
Nintendo head Shigeru Miyamoto prefaced the reveal with Fox McCloud's appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a franchise crossover few Nintendo fans expected. 'Last month, we released the Super Mario Galaxy Movie which was enjoyed by many people around the world,' Miyamoto said.
'The movie features a certain character who isn't part of the Super Mario series,' he teased. 'That's right. The main character from the Star Fox series, Fox McCloud, makes an appearance. Now Fox and his wingmen return in their own Nintendo
Switch 2 game.'
The remake keeps the core crew from the Nintendo 64 game, with Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad returning. All characters have been redesigned, while the level layouts are reportedly identical to the original. Star Fox releases exclusively on the Switch 2 on 25 June, priced at approximately £44 ($60) for the physical edition and £36 ($50) for digital.
Star Fox 64 Remake Will Feature New Content
Star Fox will not be an exact clone of the original, however. Nintendo added new material between missions, including fresh mission briefings, cutscenes, and extra story moments that expand the game's narrative. The update also brings online multiplayer and matchmaking, plus co-op options that let players split pilot and gunner roles in the same vehicle through GameShare.
Nintendo is also leaning into hardware variety, with support for the Joy-Con and even a Nintendo 64 controller for the Switch, for players who want a more nostalgic setup. The game will include challenge-oriented features and new objectives beyond the main campaign, giving longtime fans more to do once they finish the familiar route structure.
This is not Nintendo's first attempt to revisit the series. A 3DS version of Star Fox 64 was released in 2011, and Star Fox Zero launched on Wii U in 2016. Still, the new Switch 2 project is being presented as the latest major return for the series, spurring excitement among fans of the original.
Is Glen Powell's Voice in the Star Fox 64 Remake?
It's unclear if actor Glenn Powell, who voiced Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is also lending his voice in the game. An avid fan of Star Fox, he campaigned to play Fox in the animated film.
'When we were working on the first movie, we began to get phone calls from actors,' Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri told Forbes. 'After the first movie was done, there were two phone calls that came from actors expressing incredible conviction and passion about being involved with Nintendo, and one of them was from Glen Powell.'
'He explained that we had to understand how deeply he loved the character of Fox McCloud,' Meledandri said. 'His dream was one day to be part of a Star Fox movie. I'm listening to this going, 'He has no idea that Miyamoto-san and I are talking about Star Fox being in this new movie,' and Glen is expressing this passion for this.'
