Kristen Stewart has broken her long-standing silence on the 'surreal' intensity of her romance with Robert Pattinson, admitting that falling for her co-star during the filming of the Twilight saga was entirely 'unavoidable.'

In a candid reflection on 4 February 2026, the 35-year-old actress and director described Pattinson as her 'first love,' acknowledging that the tidal wave of global scrutiny made their off-screen connection as consuming as their on-screen chemistry.

Stewart revealed that she previously felt 'self-conscious' about discussing the relationship, fearing public accusations of attention-seeking. However, she now clarifies that the bond was a foundational chapter of her life, one that existed far beyond the tabloid-driven 'Robsten' narrative.

The Twilight Romance

During a deep-dive interview regarding her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, Stewart addressed the common industry warning against dating a co-star.

She noted that while some might view it as a professional risk, her emotions could not be censored. 'It's so weird, actually being honest about this. It's been so heavily consumed,' she remarked, explaining that the pressure of fronting a multi-billion-dollar franchise while navigating a first serious relationship was 'extraordinary.'

She explained that the intensity of their on-screen and off-screen connection made the romance 'unavoidable'.

The Twilight actress also reflected on how public comments affected their relationship. She admitted that she had felt 'self-conscious' about speaking openly in the past, fearing that audiences would interpret her honesty as attention-seeking. This concern, she said, had prevented her from previously acknowledging the depth of her feelings for Pattinson.

Stewart described Pattinson as her 'first love'. The actress explained that being in a high-profile relationship while simultaneously filming a blockbuster franchise created extraordinary emotional pressure, making the experience unforgettable.

Fans have long speculated about the real-life relationship between the two actors, given their on-screen chemistry and media coverage. The pair first met in 2008 and started dating in 2009. Their relationship lasted roughly three years, with most of the public attention focused on them during the height of the Twilight franchise (2008–2012).

The breakup in 2013 was triggered by a widely publicised scandal in which Stewart was photographed kissing director Rupert Sanders. Stewart admitted to the infidelity and later apologised publicly. Pattinson confirmed that the incident 'hurt' him deeply.

Stewart and Pattinson: Are They Cool Now?

According to multiple interviews, the pair have reconciled as friends. Pattinson has publicly acknowledged that he has 'moved on' and still wishes Stewart well, while Stewart has said she and Pattinson are 'good friends' today and maintain mutual respect.

They have not rekindled their romantic relationship after their split, but both have spoken positively about their shared experiences from Twilightand the growth they went through during that period of their lives.

True to their word, Pattinson, now 39, has moved on, both personally and professionally. He has been in a long‑term relationship with model and actress Suki Waterhouse since 2018, and the couple became engaged in December 2023. They welcomed their first child, a daughter, in March 2024, whom they've kept largely out of the public eye but have spoken about fondly.

Pattinson has described fatherhood as 'absolutely wonderful' and said it has changed his perspective on life and patience.

Stewart has also moved on and built a life outside her early relationship with Pattinson. She has been in a long‑term relationship with screenwriter Dylan Meyer since 2019, became engaged in 2021, and the couple married in April 2025 in an intimate ceremony attended by friends.

In 2017, Stewart publicly identified as queer and came out, and said that, as part of living authentically, she did not want to live a fragmented life. She and Meyer have talked about plans to have a family and a child in future, but she has also publicly said that she feels intimidated at the thought of giving birth.

In revisiting her Twilight years, Stewart is not rewriting history but reclaiming it — framing a much-mythologised romance as what it was to her at the time: intense, unavoidable, and the first time she fell in love.
