Jeweller Behind Melania Trump's Engagement Ring Linked to 2016 Murder Featured in Netflix's Homicide
Discover the chilling details behind the jeweller to the stars and a crime that shook New York.

Netflix has just dropped the highly anticipated third season of its true-crime documentary series Homicide, revisiting cases that stretch from a serial rapist stalking New York's Central Park in 1989 to the 2001 terrorist attack on the Twin Towers. Yet it is the opening episode that has grabbed the most attention, centring on a jeweller who once made headlines for crafting First Lady Melania Trump's engagement ring.
Netflix's Homicide Season 3: Who Is Jeffrey Rackover?
Jeffrey Rackover was known as the 'Jeweller to the Stars', designing beautiful and expensive jewellery for the likes of Oprah Winfrey. Rackover famously helped US President Donald Trump in choosing a 12-carat, emerald-cut diamond engagement ring for his 2005 wedding to Melania.
While Rackover's connection to the rich and famous helped him earn fame with the wealthy, his name would end up being associated with a crime that shocked New York in 2016.
It all started when a concerned Pat Comunale reached out to the police. His son Joey Comunale had been missing for almost a day, and the Stamford father was worried that something might have happened to him.
Sadly, Pat's hunch would turn out to be true. Joey's remains were later found in a shallow grave in New Jersey after being stabbed, dropped from the fourth floor of an apartment building, then burned to hide any evidence. The suspects were Manhattan residents Lawrence 'Larry' Dilione and James 'Jimmy' Rackover, the supposed 'son' of the famous jeweller.
Both Larry and Jimmy are currently serving time for the crime, and Jeffrey himself almost joined them. In 2018, Rackover was sued by Comunale's father, claiming that the jeweller should take responsibility after Joey was killed in an apartment that Rackover was paying for and for allegedly helping to cover up the crime. Rackover had then denied any involvement, claiming that he 'had absolutely nothing to do with these tragic events' and that he 'looks forward to his total vindication when the actual facts are revealed.'
Rackover has largely kept out of the spotlight since his 'son' was found guilty of the crime. However, the story has resurfaced thanks to the latest season of the Netflix series.
Why Does It All Matter Now?
Although the trial is long over and the suspects are behind bars, the story has once again reignited public interest. After all, Rackover has never clarified the truth of his relationship to Jimmy, who was born James Beaudoin. Likewise, the true reason why Joey Comunale was killed has never been confirmed by the suspects.
With Homicide: New York Season 2 putting the case back in the limelight, people are reminded that the truth can still remain hidden despite all of the efforts to expose it. Additionally, it's a harsh reminder that the wealthy can get away with almost anything, and Comunale's killers were only caught due to the careless way they handled the disposal of his body. Overall, it was one father's determination to find his son that ultimately led to justice being served in the harrowing Manhattan mystery.
Homicide: New York Season 2 is actually the third season of the Netflix series, which also released a season that covered crimes committed in Los Angeles. The third season consists of five episodes, which are now streaming on the platform.
