Amanda Knox, once vilified as the 'Foxy Knoxy' in headlines across the world, is back in the global spotlight nearly two decades after her arrest in Italy.

On 20 August 2025, Hulu will release The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, an eight-part limited series re-examining the case that gripped international audiences and split public opinion.

The drama arrives just months after Italy's highest court upheld her slander conviction in January 2025, reigniting questions about whether Knox went to jail, how long she served, and why her name remains so polarising.

A New Take on a Familiar Story

The Hulu series promises a fresh lens on the infamous saga. According to People, the final episode will unveil new details and attempt to reframe the narrative, challenging media stereotypes that once painted Knox as manipulative and calculating.

Actress Grace Van Patten plays the role of Knox, while Knox herself serves as an executive producer. The drama will debut with its first two episodes on Wednesday, with new instalments rolling out weekly until 1 October.

Its stylised storytelling, told largely from Knox's perspective, has already generated buzz ahead of its release for attempting to humanise her ordeal.

Did Amanda Knox Go to Jail?

One of the most frequent questions surrounding Knox remains simple: did she ever spend time in prison? The answer is yes.

Knox was arrested in November 2007 after the murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in the flat they shared in Perugia. Two years later, in December 2009, she was convicted of murder and sentenced to 26 years.

Her case twisted through Italy's courts for years. In October 2011, an appeal overturned her conviction, and she was released after serving nearly four years. Knox returned to the United States immediately.

Although reconvicted in absentia in 2014, Italy's Supreme Court definitively acquitted her of murder in 2015.

How Long Did Amanda Knox Serve?

Amanda Knox spent roughly 1,427 days, just under four years, behind bars in Italy. Most of her incarceration was in Capanne prison outside Perugia. She served from November 2007 until her acquittal in October 2011.

Her time behind bars has often been misrepresented, with some assuming she endured decades in prison and others believing she was never jailed at all. In reality, the nearly four years she spent already covered a later three-year sentence for slander.

The Slander Conviction

Separate from the murder charges, Knox faced a slander conviction over a coerced interrogation in 2007. Under pressure from police, she signed a statement implicating Patrick Lumumba, her former boss.

In June 2024, a Florence court reconvicted her of slander, sentencing her to three years. Italy's Court of Cassation upheld the verdict in January 2025, but because Knox had already served nearly four years in custody, the court ruled her sentence as time served.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, legal experts believe the conviction was preserved partly as a face-saving move for officials criticised during the botched murder investigation.

Public Fascination That Won't Fade

Even with her murder acquittal finalised in 2015, Amanda Knox remains a figure of fascination. She has since become a podcast host and criminal justice reform advocate, co-running Labyrinths and speaking out on wrongful convictions.

The upcoming Hulu series has already fuelled public debate before its premiere. As Vox notes, while it is expected to humanise Knox, the drama may gloss over some of the most controversial elements, particularly the media circus and prosecutorial overreach.

Nearly two decades after Meredith Kercher's death, Knox's story continues to divide opinion. With the Hulu series set to debut in just two days, the question of who Amanda Knox really is remains as gripping as ever.
