FBI Director Kash Patel Takes '$75,000 Government Jet' to Watch Winter Olympics Hockey
Kash Patel's Milan visit for the Winter Olympics draws scrutiny over costs and personal interests.

FBI Director Kash Patel has travelled to Milan on a United States government aircraft for the concluding days of the Winter Olympics, a trip estimated to cost taxpayers up to $75,000.
The transatlantic flight has drawn scrutiny because it aligns with the final matches of the men's ice hockey tournament, a sport Patel has played extensively. However, the FBI maintains the journey is primarily for official security briefings, diplomatic meetings and conferences at the Milan-Cortina Games.
Kash Patel Travels on Government Jet
According to CBS, Patel boarded the FBI's Gulfstream jet on Thursday. Government accounting records indicate the aircraft costs approximately $5,000 per hour to keep in the air. Given that a direct flight to northern Italy takes roughly nine hours, the total operational cost for the outbound and return journeys could reach $75,000.
Using a private federal jet is standard protocol for the FBI director, as it ensures strict security measures are maintained and allows him to return to the US at short notice if a domestic emergency arises. Under federal regulations, officials are legally required to reimburse taxpayers if a flight is undertaken solely for personal reasons.
FBI Official Defends Winter Olympics Security
FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson stated that Patel was invited to Milan last year to coordinate international safety measures. He insisted the visit is not a leisure trip.
'The FBI also has a major role in Olympic security — as we do with the World Cup, F1, and more — so we have a U.S. consulate briefing on Olympic security and current FBI posture, as well as thanking FBI personnel on the ground,' Williamson wrote on X. He added that the director's itinerary includes meetings with ambassadors.
FBI Director Attends Ice Hockey Final
Alongside his official agenda, Patel will attend the bronze medal ice hockey match on Saturday afternoon before watching the championship game on Sunday. The FBI director has a well-documented interest in the sport; he has played in defence for most of his life and was previously seen attending an NHL match alongside former professional Wayne Gretzky.
Williamson acknowledged Patel's intention to follow the tournament, posting a follow-up message regarding the director's support for the national squad. 'Kash just called me and told me to add "Please tell them yes, I am rooting for the greatest team on earth from the greatest country on earth. Go Team USA,"' the spokesperson noted.
The men's tournament reaches its semi-final stage on Friday, with Team Canada playing Team Finland, and Team USA facing Team Slovakia. The defeated nations will contest the bronze medal on Saturday at 2:40 p.m. ET, while the winners advance to the gold medal clash on Sunday at 8:10 a.m. ET.

Winter Olympics Ice Hockey Reaches Climax
Anticipation for the final is high, as active NHL players were granted clearance to compete at the Winter Olympics this year, bringing an influx of star talent to the international stage. Observers expect Team USA and Team Canada to meet in the final once again.
The men's event follows a dramatic conclusion to the women's hockey tournament, which has been one of the standout events of the Games. Team USA secured the gold medal by defeating Team Canada in sudden-death overtime, having tied the match with just two minutes remaining to avoid settling for silver.
