Pam Bondi Slapped with Subpoena for 'Possible Mismanagement' of Jeffrey Epstein Death Probe
House Committee Seeks Answers on Possible Mismanagement of Epstein Case

A powerful congressional panel has subpoenaed Attorney General Pam Bondi as scrutiny intensifies over how the U.S. Department of Justice handled the investigation into disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The move marks a significant escalation in a long-simmering controversy that has drawn bipartisan concern and renewed attention to the government's handling of one of the most high-profile criminal cases in recent history.
Why is Pam Bondi Being Subpoenaed?
The subpoena was issued by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, led by Chairman James Comer, who said lawmakers are seeking answers about the 'possible mismanagement' of the Epstein probe. Bondi has been ordered to sit for a closed-door deposition on April 14, where she is expected to face detailed questioning about the Justice Department's actions.
At the centre of the investigation is the government's handling of documents tied to Epstein, including materials related to his associates and convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. Lawmakers are examining whether the Justice Department properly complied with the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which mandated the release of millions of pages of records connected to the case.
Although the department has released more than three million pages of documents, members of Congress from both parties have expressed frustration over delays, heavy redactions, and concerns that key information may have been withheld. Some lawmakers argue that the public has yet to receive a full accounting of Epstein's network and the individuals who may have been involved.
The Justice Department, however, has pushed back against accusations of wrongdoing. Officials say Bondi has cooperated with lawmakers and was already scheduled to provide briefings before the subpoena was issued. A department spokesperson described the subpoena as unnecessary, emphasising that unredacted materials have been made available to Congress and that extensive efforts were undertaken to review sensitive files.
Bondi has acknowledged that the document review process, handled by hundreds of government lawyers under tight deadlines, may have included procedural errors. Nevertheless, she has firmly denied any intentional cover-up.
The controversy is unfolding against the backdrop of long-standing questions surrounding Epstein's 2019 death in federal custody, which authorities ruled a suicide. Lawmakers have indicated they want Bondi to address not only the release of documents but also the circumstances of Epstein's death and subsequent investigations.
What Really Happened To Jeffrey Epstein?
Jeffrey Epstein was a wealthy financier who faced multiple allegations of sexually abusing and trafficking underage girls. In July 2019, he was arrested on federal charges of sex trafficking minors and held at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre while awaiting trial.
On August 10, 2019, Epstein was found unresponsive in his jail cell and later pronounced dead. Authorities, including the New York City medical examiner, ruled his death a suicide by hanging. However, the case quickly sparked widespread controversy. Reports revealed that Epstein had been taken off suicide watch shortly before his death, and guards failed to perform regular checks. Additionally, surveillance cameras outside his cell malfunctioned that night.
These failures fuelled public scepticism and numerous conspiracy theories. Critics have continued to question whether negligence or misconduct played a role, keeping the circumstances of his death under intense scrutiny.
