'Forbes 30 Under 30 Curse' Takes Dark Turn as CEO Dies in Tragic Helicopter Crash During Kenya Holiday
The Miami entrepreneur was on a luxury safari flight when it crashed, and investigators are still determining the cause

Roger Duarte, a Miami entrepreneur recognised on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list, was among seven people killed when a charter helicopter crashed during a luxury safari trip in northern Kenya on Wednesday.
As news of the accident spread, social media users revived discussion of the so-called 'Forbes 30 Under 30 curse,' an informal online label referring to the number of former honourees who have later faced legal troubles, business collapses, or personal tragedies.
The 42-year-old businessman was travelling with six other people when the helicopter crashed near Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County shortly after departing from Loisaba Conservancy. Kenyan authorities confirmed there were no survivors, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The victims also included Florida-based Telemundo executive José Suárez; Ecuador's intelligence chief Michele Sensi-Contugi; his wife, fashion designer Stephany Hollihan Vásconez; two other American tourists; and the Kenyan pilot.
Entrepreneur Built a Seafood Business Empire
Duarte began his career in investment banking before leaving the industry at the age of 24 to launch George Stone Crab, a Florida-based seafood exporter specialising in stone crabs from the Florida Keys.
The company's rapid growth earned him a place on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list in 2016 after becoming one of the largest distributors of Florida stone crabs to Latin America. He later expanded his portfolio by founding the Miami restaurant brands My Ceviche and Zuuk Mediterranean Kitchen. He lived in Coral Gables with his wife, Nicole Valls, and their two young sons.
Family Mourns as Investigation Begins
Duarte's father confirmed his son's death shortly after the crash. 'I'm very devastated right now,' Roger Duarte Sr told the Daily Mail. 'I don't have the words to express my feelings. We don't know much about what happened. They are investigating the crash.'
According to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, the helicopter crashed at about 9:13 a.m. local time while travelling from Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area of Samburu County.
The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC130 B4 operated by Lady Lori Helicopters for safari company &Beyond, was carrying six tourists and one pilot. Emergency responders, including the Kenya Red Cross, were dispatched to the remote crash site, while US officials are assisting Kenyan authorities with the investigation.
Prominent Leaders Were Also Among the Victims
The crash claimed the lives of several prominent international figures. José Suárez, president and general manager of several Telemundo-owned television stations in Florida, was remembered by NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Conde as 'an exceptional colleague and mentor' whose leadership left a lasting impact on the company.
Also killed were Ecuador's intelligence chief Michele Sensi-Contugi and his wife, Stephany Hollihan Vásconez, an American-Ecuadorian fashion designer and founder of Sensi Studio. The couple are survived by their two children.
Online Discussion Revives the 'Forbes 30 Under 30 Curse'
Following confirmation of Duarte's death, social media users again referenced the so-called 'Forbes 30 Under 30 curse', a nickname that has circulated online for several years.
The phrase refers to the number of former honourees who have later experienced high-profile setbacks, including criminal prosecutions, corporate failures, fraud allegations, or untimely deaths. It is an internet meme rather than an official designation used by Forbes and does not suggest any causal connection between appearing on the list and later events.
Duarte's death renewed discussion of the online nickname because of his inclusion in Forbes' 2016 list of young entrepreneurs.
Authorities Continue Crash Investigation
Kenyan aviation officials have not yet determined what caused the helicopter to crash in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe, a popular safari destination known for its wildlife.
Investigators are examining the wreckage as authorities continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding one of the country's deadliest tourist helicopter accidents in recent years.
