Stephen Hawking 'Princess' Party Photo with Bill Clinton Goes Viral as Internet Asks: Is This True or AI Generated?
Despite precautions, the AI images spread as real, with detection tools giving mixed results

Images appearing to show Stephen Hawking dressed in a princess costume with a crown while being carried by former US President Bill Clinton have rapidly gone viral across social media. Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram users shared the photos widely, generating thousands of comments and memes within hours.
Viewers questioned the context of the images, with many wondering when and where such an unusual event could have taken place. The combination of two widely recognised public figures in an unexpected, whimsical scene fuelled intense online discussion and speculation.
Photo Details Captivate Online Users
In the images, Hawking appears in a pink princess dress, wearing a small crown, while Clinton is pictured carrying him. The indoor setting of the photos and the festive props contributed to the impression of a themed party. The unusual nature of the scene quickly drew attention, with users describing the moment as 'surreal' and 'unexpectedly humorous'.

Many social media posts included edited versions of the images and humorous commentary. Despite the playful tone, some users debated whether the images could be real, citing Hawking's past public appearances and Clinton's profile as a former president.
Images Confirmed as AI-Generated
The photos were later confirmed to be artificial creations. Facebook user Marc-André Lavoie, who reportedly uploaded the pictures, told Snopes via direct message that he generated the images using AI and shared it to the Facebook group 'Crazed AI', which is known for users sharing AI-generated content.
Lavoie said the posts were clearly labelled as AI-generated to prevent misinformation. 'I find the context of my images so absurd that I did not expect anyone to believe they were real,' he told Snopes.
Despite Lavoie's precautions, the photos were later shared across other platforms without disclaimers, leading many to mistake them for genuine photographs. Online AI-detection tools provided mixed results: Hive Moderation correctly identified both images as AI-generated, while Sightengine did not.

Social Media Reactions and Viral Spread
The images prompted a wide variety of reactions online, ranging from amusement to incredulity. Memes, jokes, and speculative commentary spread quickly, demonstrating the rapid circulation potential of content featuring famous figures in absurd or unexpected contexts.
The incident highlights the growing impact of generative AI on social media, as realistic but fabricated images can quickly gain attention and provoke widespread discussion. It also underscores the need for critical verification when sharing viral content, particularly when it involves high-profile individuals.
