Dad's Final Words Uttered After Shooting Daughter Over Alleged Explosive Trump Row Fuel Public Backlash
A political disagreement escalates into a fatal shooting, raising questions about gun safety and family dynamics

A father's frantic cries moments after fatally shooting his daughter have ignited international outrage, as fresh scrutiny falls on what sparked the alleged explosive Trump row inside the family home. The death of 23-year-old Lucy Harrison has resurfaced in headlines following renewed attention on the dad's final words after he pulled the trigger, in a case that has raised stark questions about gun safety, accountability, and political polarisation within families.
The case has gripped the public on both sides of the Atlantic. It raises troubling questions about firearm safety, accountability and how a heated Trump row escalated into a devastating daughter shooting.
A Holiday Visit That Turned Fatal
Lucy Harrison, from Warrington in Cheshire, travelled to the United States with her boyfriend, Sam Littler, for what was meant to be a family visit and holiday. Instead, the trip ended in tragedy.
An inquest heard that Lucy and her father, Kris Harrison, became embroiled in a heated argument about Trump shortly before she was due to leave for the airport. The political disagreement reportedly intensified as they discussed gun ownership and current affairs, with Donald Trump preparing to begin his second term in office. Littler described the exchange as a 'big argument' during evidence heard in January 2025.
The Argument Before The Daughter Shooting
According to testimony, Lucy grew upset when her father spoke about owning firearms. She had previously raised concerns about guns being kept in the home, particularly around her younger siblings.
During the dispute, Lucy allegedly challenged her father with an emotional question about how he would feel if she were sexually assaulted. The response, the court heard, left her visibly distressed, and she went upstairs shortly afterwards.
Around 30 minutes before the family were due to leave for the airport, Lucy was led into her father's bedroom. Within seconds, Littler heard a loud bang. Lucy had been shot.
Dad's Final Words After the Shot
In the immediate aftermath, Kris Harrison was heard shouting: 'I don't know, I don't know, call 911.' Those final words, captured in witness accounts, have since become a haunting focal point of the case, for many encapsulating the panic and disbelief that followed the fatal discharge of the weapon.
Harrison later stated that he had retrieved a Glock 9mm semi-automatic handgun from his bedside cabinet to show Lucy, saying he owned the firearm for family security. 'As I lifted the gun to show her I suddenly heard a loud bang,' he said. 'I did not understand what had happened. Lucy immediately fell.' Medical reports concluded that Lucy was shot in the chest from mid-range by another person.
Coroner's Conclusion and Legal Divide
Despite a US grand jury declining to bring charges in June, citing insufficient evidence, the UK inquest reached a starkly different conclusion. Coroner Jacqueline Devonish ruled that Lucy died as a result of unlawful killing due to gross negligence manslaughter. She described pointing a loaded firearm at his daughter and pulling the trigger as reckless.
The coroner said this conduct meant he had aimed the weapon without checking whether it was loaded, behaviour she deemed directly responsible for Lucy's death. The contrast between the decision not to prosecute in the United States and the UK finding has intensified debate over how different systems treat shootings in domestic settings.
Family Grief and Growing Backlash
Lucy's mother, Jane Coates, described her daughter as a 'real force of life' who was passionate and caring. Friends echoed that sentiment, portraying her as someone unafraid to debate issues she cared about. A friend, Ella Gowing, told the inquest Lucy had previously expressed fears about firearms in the household and described volatility within the home.
Public reaction has been swift and emotional. Many have highlighted the alleged Trump row as a symbol of wider political divisions that can fracture families. Others have focused squarely on gun safety, arguing that the case underlines the risks of keeping loaded weapons in domestic environments, especially around children and visiting relatives.
A Case That Resonates Beyond One Family
Lucy Harrison's death has come to represent more than a single household tragedy. It has sparked wider conversations about responsibility, gun culture, and the consequences of heated political exchanges that unfold in homes already containing firearms.
Harrison said in his statement that he 'fully accepts the consequences' and carries the weight of the loss every day. Critics counter that remorse cannot reverse what happened or address the systemic issues the case has exposed. At its heart, the story is about a young woman whose visit home ended in catastrophe after an alleged explosive Trump row collided with a gun kept in a bedside cabinet.
