Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, remains missing. The FBI has relied on the available evidence such as images, videos and tips. However, this effort is not enough to pinpoint a potential suspect behind the disappearance of the 84-year-old.

In theory, authorities believe that Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona. One of the curious pieces of evidence that the FBI has right now is the video footage captured from a doorbell camera.

To recall, that clip captured a masked man wearing gloves and holding a gun at the front door of the Guthrie residence. Beyond that, investigators are trying to figure out what happened next.

Was The Criminal Intent Personal?

FBI profiler Dr Ann Burgess shared her thoughts on the case, explaining how she would approach the case when she appeared on Surviving the Survivor. She shared how it was important to determine if Nancy Guthrie was abducted or missing. After that, the next question would be why would anyone target the 84-year-old woman? What would be the motive?

She went on to detail that there would be four possible categories. They are:

  1. Criminal Enterprise
  2. Personal Cause
  3. Sexual Reasoning
  4. Group Cause

Burgess feels that the last two, sexual reasoning and group cause could be eliminated since there is no evidence that points to either. Criminal enterprise was a possible motive where money would be a potential motive.

It could be personal according to Burgess. She suggests it could be someone known to Guthrie. Hence from her point of view, it could be either one of the first two or a combination of both.

'It could be a personal cause. If it's going to be somebody known to her, that might be so. But it still could also have the element of criminal enterprise,' Burgess said.

Treating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie as personal may be a bit tricky. By personal, it suggests someone who, at one time was close to the Guthrie clan. There is a video titled The Nancy Guthrie Case, Ex-Husband Theory that links Savannah Guthrie's ex-husband, Mark Orchard.

Bringing up the masked man captured on video, why would Orchard, a journalist, resort to such? Since their split in 2009, it appears Orchard has moved on. Although the separation was horrible and heartbreaking according to Savannah, what would the senior broadcast producer gain?

Besides, it appears Orchard has chosen to move on and keep his personal life private. So dragging him into the Nancy Guthrie case, even if just in theory, makes no sense.

Did Nancy Guthrie Open the Door?

As previously reported here in IBT UK, burglary appears to be a plausible motive of the masked man on the video. The backpack and instruments the suspect had at the time point to a planned heist at the Guthrie residence.

However, the events that followed are what puzzles many. What if Guthrie did open the door and the male suspect forced his way in and injured the 84-year-old in the process?

The blood found outside the home of Nancy Guthrie could be caused by that. Speculation is that she was carried out of the Catalina Foothills property. However, a new question to consider – if it was a burglary, why would the suspect take the 84-year-old when he could take whatever valuables he wanted from the residence?

There have been a lot of theories on the Nancy Guthrie case, all based on evidence and information on hand. The search for the missing mother of Savannah Guthrie continues, with the Today host and her family just wanting to know if Nancy is still alive and her whereabouts.
